President of Hockey Operations/General Manager Bill Zito announced Thursday that the team and forward Mackie Samoskevich have reached agreement on a one-year contract, keeping the 2021 first-round selection in Sunrise.
Samoskevich entered the offseason a restricted free agent, meaning his contract had expired, but he was still under team control.
Other teams can offer a contract, but the current team can match it or receive compensation if they let him go.
“Mackie is a talented young forward who demonstrated skill and maturity well above his age in his first full season,” Zito said. “He showcased the ability to slot into any hole in our lineup and find success this past season, which is a testament to both his play and character. We look forward to seeing him compete in our organization for years to come.”
Samoskevich, 22, saw a lot of action during his first full season, scoring 15 goals and recording 16 assists in 72 games.
His playing time diminished in the playoffs due to the return of forwards Matthew Tkachuk and Brad Marchand, as Samoskevich appeared in only four games during Florida’s back-to-back Stanley Cup run.
According to PuckPedia, Samoskevich is set to earn $775,000 before becoming a restricted free agent again next offseason.
