The Calgary Flames deserve a ton of credit for coming so close to forcing themselves into the postseason. That will be of little consolation to the collective as they put on a brave face for tonight’s meaningless season finale against the Los Angeles Kings.
While offering three player picks, our Flames vs. Kings prediction and NHL picks expect the visitors to finish the season strong. Game time from Crypto.com Arena is at 9:30 p.m. ET (ESPN).

I bet against the Kings in Seattle, and while almost imploding completely in the final 15 minutes, they held on for the 6-5 victory. With 12 wins from the last 15 games, the Kings have the third-best record (tied with Vegas) since March 20. Yet, I’m backing the Flames, who have the fifth-best record (10-2-3) since March 18. 
While the disappointment will last well into the summer for the Flames, they can be proud of how they acquitted themselves in a season where nobody gave them a chance to take the playoff battle to the penultimate game. 
Unless the Kings are robots, which they might be, I expect one let-the-foot-off-the-gas moment in the final game, particularly with what should be a slightly inferior lineup. I’d be surprised to see Darcy Kuemper, who Jim Hiller will want to protect from any risk of injury. The Flames will probably make some lineup changes, too, most notably in goal, finally providing Dustin Wolf a night off. 
And if I know the Flames like I think I do, they’ll beat the what-could-have-been drum all the way through the offseason, and rightfully so. The Flames will draw level with the St. Louis Blues on 96 points with a victory.
They’ll be on the outside of the playoffs looking in due to losing the tiebreaker, an equally agonizing and respectful conclusion.

Huberdeau had a bounce-back season for the Flames, scoring 62 points with tonight’s game remaining. He has three assists in the last two games and should thrive in a situation where the checking isn’t nearly as tight. With a hot hand and slightly more time and space, I’m comfortable backing him to secure at least one point.

Kuzmenko has added a dimension that the Kings previously lacked, particularly on the power play. He’s also an expert at playing pond hockey and should thrive in this low-contact scenario. Kuzmenko has at least an assist in six of the last nine contests, a run in which he amassed 10 helpers. DraftKings offers +130 odds, which is slightly better than Caesars’ +127.

If you omit Dustin Wolf from the equation, Nazem Kadri was the Flames’ MVP. He almost dragged the Flames to the playoffs thanks to his bullish offensive production. And Kadri doesn’t have an off-switch, which should bode well against a Kings team focused on getting through the season finale unscathed.  
Kadri hit the Over in four of the previous five games, and I expect him to go out with a bang. Your $10 wager at DraftKings (+126) will profit $12.60 if he fires at least three on David Rittich (assuming Kuemper rests).
