Jonathan Huberdeau looks like a different player at home, and he'll get the Flames going against the visiting Golden Knights.
NHL
The Calgary Flames could close the gap between them and a playoff spot to just three points if they can get a win tonight.
My Golden Knights vs. Flames predictions expect the veterans to play a central role in their push, with Jonathan Huberdeau being front and center.
Let’s dive deeper into my NHL picks for April 5.
My Flames pick: Jonathan Huberdeau Over 0.5 points (-125 at BET99)
My Flames analysis
The Calgary Flames are a noticeably more potent offensive team on home soil. That’s perhaps most evident with veteran winger Jonathan Huberdeau.
Huberdeau has hit the scoresheet in 45% of away games this season compared to a whopping 62% success rate in Calgary.
He’s taken things up a notch of late, producing at least one point in eight of the last 10 games at home. He produced more multi-point efforts (three) than zeros (two).
Huberdeau has been carrying an immense workload, logging more than 21 minutes per night spanning the past 10 home dates. Head coach Ryan Huska has really relied on Huberdeau to produce as the team fights tooth and nail to try and steal a playoff spot.
That will surely continue given Calgary’s favorable scheduling down the stretch. The Flames haven’t travelled since Tuesday and don’t have a single back-to-back remaining, meaning Huberdeau can play all the minutes he can handle without the worry about limited recovery time.
The Vegas Golden Knights are terrific, but they’re only .500 on the road and conceded at least three goals in three of the past four — only holding a putrid Nashville offense below that number.
Win or lose, the Flames should score enough to keep this game competitive.
Jonathan Huberdeau Over 0.5 points
Jonathan Huberdeau Over 1.5 shots
William Karlsson Over 1.5 shots
Huberdeau has generated strong shot volume in Calgary. He’s recorded multiple shots in 65% of his home games and eight of the last 10. He’s attempted at least three shots in each of the 10, which bodes well for his chances of success.
Huberdeau has cleared 1.5 shots in a whopping 75% of his games this season when attempting three shots or more. Given his immense workload, that’s a benchmark he should hit once again.
William Karlsson is another low-shot total that pops off the page. He’s cleared 1.5 shots in 67% of his games this season, and he’s an even more important piece for the Golden Knights with second-line center Tomas Hertl sidelined.
Karlsson also has a remarkably strong track record against the Flames, piling up three or more shots in seven straight, head-to-head meetings.
