The Kenyon field hockey team returned to action over the weekend, falling 3-1 on Saturday to rival Denison University on the road. Then, the Owls won on Wednesday against The College of Wooster, 2-1. With just two games to go in the regular season, Kenyon’s record stands at 5-9 (5-2 NCAC).
The Owls got off to a blistering start against Denison, as Henny Maher ’29 whipped the first shot of the game toward goal in the fifth minute of play, which the Big Red’s goalie narrowly saved. Less than a minute later, right after a penalty corner, Maren Lawrence ’27 sent in a nice pass that found the stick of Abby Golub ’27, who calmly slotted the ball in the back of the net to give Kenyon the early 1-0 advantage.
However, it was all Denison after that. Less than two minutes following Golub’s goal, the Big Red struck back, evening the score after a pair of penalty corners of their own. With the game tied, the second quarter was a defensive battle, resulting in neither team taking the decisive lead before halftime.

Denison came out of the break with a vengeance, and despite the Owls’ attempts to withstand the pressure, the Big Red finally found the winning goal in the 43rd minute of action. Then, Denison sealed the deal in the fourth quarter, scoring the final goal of the match and putting the victory thoroughly out of Kenyon’s reach.
After the game, Golub was proud of how the Owls started things out. “We knew we needed to come out hard from the start but remain calm and play our game which is something that we have been working on,” she wrote in an email to the Collegian. “It was very important that we played clean hockey and remained patient. We did just that and earned the first two corners which we knew we had to capitalize on.”
Against Wooster on Wednesday, the Owls started off strong, recording their first shot from Lawrence less than two minutes in. Neither team was able to draw first blood for the remainder of the opening period, but just before the 23-minute mark in the second quarter, Olivia Wangerow ’28 rebounded her own missed shot and beautifully placed it in for the game’s opening goal.
Kenyon sunk into a defensive shape and didn’t give up any goals for the rest of the first half. However, Wooster got out of the gates quickly to start the third quarter, scoring the tying goal less than one minute in. For the rest of the third period, both teams’ defenses held strong and the game went into the fourth hungry for the tie-breaking goal. Ultimately, the Owls simply wanted it more, with Gigi Johnson ’27 scoring her first career goal just two minutes into the period. Despite several more offensive opportunities, that was the final goal of the game, ending the match with a victorious 2-1 score.
The Owls will be back in action on Saturday against DePauw University for the team’s annual Pride Game. With the season beginning to wind down, Golub was optimistic about Kenyon’s outlook going forward. “I think we are a very capable and talented team and we can make it to the playoffs by continuing to work hard and improve in every game and practice,” she wrote.
