Former Colorado Avalanche goalie Alexandar Georgiev has found a new home.
It’s crazy how much can change in less than a year.
Entering last season, the Avs had dreams of winning a Stanley Cup with Georgiev in net. But he got off to a brutal start, giving up 3.38 goals per game and posting just an .874 save percentage in 18 contests.
Avalanche president Joe Sakic, GM Chris MacFarland and head coach Jared Bednar had seen enough. They shipped Alexandar Georgiev to the Sharks for goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood. He’s Colorado’s starter entering the 2025-26 season and has already inked a contract extension with the franchise.
But for Georgiev, it appears he’s barely hanging on in the NHL. He wasn’t any better in San Jose than he was with the Avs, allowing 3.88 goals per game and registering an .875 save percentage. In 31 games with the Sharks, Georgiev posted a 7-19-4 record.
With free agency essentially over, many wondered if he’d land a deal to stay in the league. That happened on Thursday, albeit with one of the worst teams in the NHL.
We have signed goaltender Alexandar Georgiev to a one-year contract worth $825,000.

That’s a lot of money in the real world from the Sabres to Alexandar Georgiev, but not in the NHL. Especially for a guy who was the starting goalie on a championship contender just nine months ago.
Georgiev will compete with Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, Devon Levi and Alex Lyon for time in the Buffalo net, so it’s not even clear if he’ll be in the team’s plans once the regular season arrives.
It never really worked out for Georgiev with the Avalanche, arriving right after they won the Stanley Cup in 2022 and winning just one playoff series in Colorado.
We’ll see if yet another change of scenery gets his career back on track, but Alexandar Georgiev won’t have anything close to the supporting cast he had with the Avs.
