Here’s why I’m backing an Edmonton ML bet below in my Oilers Canadiens free pick & gambling prediction for this matchup.
The Edmonton Oilers head into Montreal to face the Canadiens in this NHL regular season matchup at the Bell Centre on December 14, 2025, with the game airing on NHLN.
Edmonton enters at 15-11-6, while Montreal sits just a hair ahead at 16-12-4, making this one of those “somebody has to separate themselves” type of games.
The Oilers’ recent form has been the usual Edmonton roller coaster, but the highs have been loud. Wins over the Toronto Maple Leafs (6-3) and Detroit Red Wings (4-1) reminded everyone what this roster looks like when it’s locked in.
Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl did what they typically do in those games, which is control the pace and fill the scoresheet.
Montreal hasn’t exactly been cruising either. The Canadiens dropped a tight 5-4 decision to the New York Rangers, a game that featured plenty of offense and just enough defensive lapses to ruin the night. They did bounce back with a 4-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins, showing that this group can respond when things start to slide.
Cole Caufield and Oliver Kapanen continue to drive the offense, even if consistency remains a work in progress.
Historically, these matchups tend to be competitive, and the most recent meeting in 2026 ended with Edmonton edging Montreal by a slim margin.
With both teams hovering around the playoff bubble in their respective conferences, this one carries more weight than the standings might initially suggest.

The betting market gives Edmonton a slight edge, listing the Oilers at -127 on the moneyline, while Montreal checks in at +107. That pricing suggests respect for Edmonton’s top-end talent, even on the road.
The puck line points to a close game as well, with Edmonton -1.5 (+187) and Montreal +1.5 (-233).
Recent results favor the Oilers, who have picked up wins against quality opponents like Toronto and Detroit. McDavid and Draisaitl have been front and center during that stretch, doing exactly what sportsbooks expect them to do. Montreal’s last five have been more uneven, mixing narrow losses with solid wins, including that bounce-back performance against Pittsburgh.
As the Oilers sit seventh in the Western Conference and the Canadiens hover tenth in the East, both teams see this game as an opportunity to grab points they can’t afford to waste.
Home ice helps Montreal, but Edmonton’s firepower has a way of traveling.
We want to hear from you below! Comments are welcome! Give us your picks for this Edmonton Oilers vs. Montreal Canadiens NHL matchup.
Montreal’s recent stretch pretty much sums up their season. They handled the Penguins 4-2, then turned around and dropped close games to the Rangers and Lightning.
The 5-4 loss to New York showed they can score with just about anyone, while also reminding bettors that defense remains optional some nights.
Offensively, the Canadiens have been productive. They rank 10th in goals with 99 and seventh in assists with 176, which explains why most of their games stay entertaining. Their power play has been effective as well, ranking seventh in the league with 22 power play goals.
Defensively, it’s been more of a mixed bag. Montreal ranks third in blocks with 523, showing plenty of effort, but they sit 21st in goals against with 106. Shutouts have been nonexistent, which tells you exactly how often opponents find the net.
Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield continue to lead the way offensively. Suzuki has posted 36 points on eight goals and 28 assists, while Caufield has added 33 points with 17 goals.
On the back end, Lane Hutson’s 49 blocks highlight his growing importance to this lineup.
Edmonton enters this matchup playing some of its best hockey of the season. The Oilers have won four of their last five games, including that convincing 6-3 win over Toronto.
Scoring at least four goals in each of those victories tends to make life easier, especially when your stars are doing star things.
Connor McDavid remains the engine. He’s been all over the scoresheet lately, including a two-goal, one-assist night against the Maple Leafs. On the season, McDavid has racked up 18 goals and 33 assists in 32 games, which feels almost routine at this point.
Leon Draisaitl has been just as important, posting 17 goals and 26 assists so far. His three-assist performance against Toronto highlighted his playmaking ability and why opposing defenses usually pick their poison when he’s on the ice.
In goal, Tristan Jarry has provided steady play, stopping 25 of 28 shots in the win over Toronto.
With 10 wins in 15 games, Jarry has given Edmonton reliable goaltending, which is often the final piece when this team goes on a run.
Edmonton Oilers vs. Montreal Canadiens bottom line: Elite firepower meets shaky defense, and whichever team blinks first probably decides whether this turns into a track meet or a grind.
Here is my Oilers Canadiens free pick: Edmonton comes into this matchup playing some of its best hockey, winning four of the last five games while the offense has been rolling. Scoring six or more goals in three of those wins shows just how dangerous they’ve been when they find early rhythm.
Also, Montreal hasn’t been nearly as steady, especially in its own zone. The Canadiens have allowed four or more goals in three of their last five games, and those defensive lapses have turned manageable games into uphill battles.
When one team is finishing chances and the other is leaking goals, the matchup usually tilts quickly.
Besides, Edmonton’s confidence shows in the way they push the pace and keep pressure on opposing defenses. They’re not sitting back or protecting leads lately, which keeps opponents under constant strain.
Montreal has competed in stretches, but inconsistency has been a problem, with three losses in their last five outings. When they fall behind early, clawing back into games hasn’t come easily.
After all, this sets up as a spot where form matters more than price. My NHL numbers land on Oilers ML -127, and that’s the side I’m comfortable backing as Edmonton looks to stay hot.
