Eden Prairie’s quest for a State Class AA Hockey Tournament berth ended in a 5-2 loss to Holy Family Catholic Feb. 22 at Edina’s Braemar Arena.
It was a frustrating afternoon for the Eagles, who fell behind early, caught up and then gave up a goal to trail 3-2. In the final minute Holy Family scored a pair of empty-net goals to make the final 5-2. But it was nothing like a 5-2 game.
“Holy Family played a terrific game,” Eden Prairie head coach Mike Terwilliger said. “We just couldn’t get the equalizer in the third period. It hurts right now, but when our guys look back on the season they will see a lot of positives.”
The No. 1 positive for the season was tying Edina for the Lake title, Eden Prairie’s first since 2018.
“We can see that with a lot of pride,” Terwilliger said. “Edina is a great team.”
Terwilliger saw Section 2AA as very balanced this year. “Both semifinal games went down to the wire,” he said. “Shakopee’s win over Minnetonka could have gone either way, and our game with Holy Family could have gone either way.”
Each team had a goal in the first period with Ryder Sorensen scoring for HFC and Rio Treharne firing back for Eden Prairie with assists from Chase Klute and Alex Hall.
Cooper Avelar of the Fire scored a power-play goal in the second period to put HFC on top 2-1 before Treharne tallied on a power play with assists from Adam Thomas and Cameron Rice. Unfortunately for the Eagles, Bryce Wittala scored just 10 seconds after Treharne had tied the score, so the Fire went into the second intermission with a 3-2 lead.
Chances on both sides continued in the third period with neither team able to score.
Coach Terwilliger made the decision to pull goalie Bennett Wilmer in favor of an extra attacker. Then the Fire made two long shots into the Eagles’ empty cage for the final 5-2 margin. Those goals were scored by Sorensen and Will Dunlap.
Wilmer stopped 22 of the 25 shots that he faced. HFC goaltender Adam Kimbrel was sharp in stopping 32 of 34.
The effort that EP’s Treharne put into the game was inspirational. “Rio played a terrific game with two goals and another shot that hit the post,” coach Terwilliger noted. “The loss was hard on our seniors. They had a great season and will collect some postseason honors. We are going to miss their leadership next season.”
With that said, the Eagles will return starting goalie Wilmer, defenseman Cameron Rice and six experienced forwards next season. “We will get help from the JV and our Bantams,” Terwilliger said.

The Young and the Restless spoilers for the hit CBS soap reveal February sweeps will be lackluster. This first week of sweeps was rather boring after the Jordan (Colleen Zenk) and Ian (Ray Wise) drama played out in January.
Maria Varela’s jaw dropped when she saw the social media post: “We will be tabling on campus asking fellow students to report their criminal classmates to ICE for deportation.”
A Look Back at the Day Minnesota Nearly Hit -60°F. When Minnesotans brag about surviving brutal winters, they have real stories to tell – and none quite compare to the extraordinary cold snap of February 1899. Historical records reveal just how extreme that winter was, with temperatures plummeting to an unimaginable -59°F at Leech Lake.
