Fans of Pixar and professional hockey can watch a special live event when the Washington Capitals face the New York Rangers in the Inside Out Classic on Sunday, April 5, at 7 p.m. ET. This real-time animated NHL game will air on Disney+, ESPN+, Disney Channel, and Disney XD, offering a unique way to experience the matchup. The presentation uses advanced tracking technology to recreate every play on the ice using characters and settings from the Inside Out films. While the animated version plays on these platforms, the traditional game broadcast will air simultaneously on ESPN.
The Inside Out Classic marks the third time ESPN and Disney have produced an animated NHL game. This specific event takes place on Hockey Island, a location found inside the mind of the character Riley. Viewers will see animated versions of NHL players competing alongside emotions like Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Anxiety. To make movements look natural, the production uses optical tracking and positional data to capture the exact limb and stick positions of the athletes in real time.
Several actors from the movies will participate in the broadcast. The voices of Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Anxiety are all part of the presentation. Even the announcers will be part of the virtual world. Commentators Drew Carter, Kevin Weekes, and Arda Öcal will use motion capture gear and virtual reality headsets so their digital avatars can stand right on Hockey Island while they call the game.
This project follows the success of previous collaborations like the NHL Big City Greens Classic. It relies on systems developed by Sony’s Beyond Sports and Hawk-Eye Innovations to turn raw data from the arena into a digital world. These tools allow the broadcast to mirror the speed and intensity of the actual game while making it accessible to younger audiences and families.
The partnership between the NHL and Disney expanded recently to create more of these alternate broadcasts. By using popular stories and characters, the league aims to reach new fans in different ways. This technology has already been used for other sports, including recent football and basketball presentations featuring Mickey Mouse and characters from Monsters Inc.
International fans can also join the event. The Inside Out Classic will be available on Disney+ in various regions, including Latin America, Australia, and parts of Europe. For those who miss the live action, a replay will be available on Disney+ in the United States and other markets shortly after the game ends.
