Jack Hughes suffered a non-hockey injury to his hand, the New Jersey Devils announced Friday afternoon.
Hughes was injured in a freak accident at a team dinner, according to a team source.
He is currently being evaluated according to the team, and his status for Saturday’s game against the Washington Capitals is in question. Hughes is off to an outstanding start to the season, with 10 goals and 10 assists in 17 games. He is tied for 15th in the NHL in goals and leads the Devils in points.

This continues Hughes’ unfortunate trend of injuries. The 24-year-old centerman has missed 20 games in each of the last two seasons, including a shoulder injury last March that ended his 2024-25 season early.

New Jersey currently has the second-best record in the NHL behind only Colorado. The Devils lead the Metropolitan Division at 12-4-1, powered by an eight-game win streak in late October. They’ve scored the ninth-most goals, largely thanks to the productive top line centered by Hughes. He had two assists in Thursday night’s 4-3 overtime win in Chicago, including a helper on Simon Nemec’s game-tying goal late in the third period.
New Jersey also owns the seventh-ranked power play, scoring at a 25 percent rate, and Hughes is tied for the team lead with five points with the man advantage.
The team didn’t offer a timeline for Hughes’ recovery, saying it will provide a future update when available.
