PREVIOUS COVERAGE:
Curry College women’s ice hockey team has advanced to the CNE (Conference of New England) Championship after a convincing 5-0 win over The University of New England, at home. It was their first playoff win, and first home playoff game.
Now they are on the cusp of the CNE Championship, and will go on the road to face Endicott College on Saturday, March 8th at 3:00 p.m. This is the team’s second CNE Championship appearance following last season’s 5-3 loss to Western New England.
Despite the loss, Head Coach Kelly Rider is optimistic about the team entering the Championship for the second time.
“I am proud of the work and effort put in by the coaches and players that enabled us to get to the championship game again,” Rider said. “With back to back appearances in the Championship, and the improvements we’ve made each year, it proves that the success we’ve had is not luck or a fluke, and that we are one of the top teams in the CNE.”
Coach Rider also mentions the maturity of the players is a major change this year.
“These 22 returners (13 of which are seniors) all had the experience of our playoff run last year, another year of experience playing in the league, and another year of growth as individuals and as a team,” Rider said. “That extra experience helps with confidence and with battling adversity.”
Such seniors are gearing up for the big game. Left Wing, Senior Grayson Goolgasian, a Public Relations Major, also one of the team captains, who leads the team in points scored, said confidence has helped the team throughout the season.
“We have built up our confidence, and now we are bringing that into the championship game,” Goolgasian said. “Confidence is key for our team and believing in ourselves, and this year we have that.”
Other coaching staff are proud to see the progress the team has made. Alex Ochterbeck, the assistant coach, who also played for the Curry men’s hockey team, says he’s proud to see the player’s growth.
“What I enjoy the most about coaching this team is helping these girls become the women they are meant to be,” Ochterbeck said. “That has been my goal since day one and watching them grow and become more confident in themselves and their abilities has been amazing.”
Coach Ochterbeck is also really happy to see both the men’s and women’s programs are doing well.
“Watching the success the men’s team has had over the past couple seasons has been fun to see as an alum,” Ochterbeck said. “It’s also extremely motivating for me; to share the knowledge I gained from my time on the men’s team in order to help the women’s program reach our goals.”
Such success resides in other players. Ava Doyle, a Junior Defenseman majoring in Accounting and Business Administration, says the team is ready to give it their all on Saturday.
“We have talked as a team about how not many other teams have made it to the championship twice in a row in our conference, so it’s something we don’t take for granted and we feel confident we deserve to be here,” Doyle said. “We know how tough it is to get there, and now we’re even more motivated to make the most of the opportunity.”
