Here’s why I’m backing an OVER bet below in my Blue Jackets Maple Leafs free pick & gambling prediction for this matchup.
The Columbus Blue Jackets head into Scotiabank Arena looking to punch above their weight against a Maple Leafs team still trying to figure out what they are. Toronto’s record may be middling, but their ceiling shoots up fast when their stars get rolling.
This matchup sets up as a momentum test — one team searching for consistency, the other trying to stop wobbling before things slide further.
Columbus enters at 10-8-2 and is fresh off a 5-2 loss to Winnipeg, a game where defensive lapses kept popping up at the worst times. Even then, they’ve shown flashes of life with a tight win over Montreal, and their offensive depth keeps them hanging around most nights.
Meanwhile, Toronto sits at 9-9-2 after scraping out a narrow win over St. Louis. At the same time, they’ve dropped several close ones lately, and their inability to string together quality stretches is becoming a pattern.
As usual, when the Leafs play to their talent level, they look dangerous — the issue is doing it for more than a period at a time.
Columbus won two of three meetings last season, so the Jackets won’t lack confidence. On the other hand, Toronto badly needs a win that feels like a step forward, not just another coin flip.

It’s Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Toronto Maple Leafs — let’s see if either team takes command.
Toronto enters as a slight favorite at -117, while Columbus sits close behind at -102. Oddsmakers clearly expect a tight matchup, and the +1.5 puck line on Columbus at heavy juice backs that up.
Earlier this week, Columbus alternated wins and losses, and their stumble against Winnipeg highlighted the defensive issues that still haven’t been resolved. Even so, their grind-it-out win over Montreal shows they can adjust when the game slows down.
As for Toronto, their victory over St. Louis snapped a small skid. In the meantime, they’ve been stuck in a run of tight games, and their inability to close remains a lingering concern. At home, though, their offensive weapons tend to wake up quicker.
We want to hear from you below! Comments are welcome! Give us your picks for this Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Toronto Maple Leafs NHL matchup.
Toronto’s offense still drives their identity. They sit second in both goals (70) and assists (123), and their top-end talent keeps them dangerous every night. In fact, Nylander’s 27 points across 17 games show how steady he’s been, while Tavares continues aging like a quiet storm with 11 goals and 14 assists.
Defensively, the picture is shakier. Even then, Morgan Rielly and Oliver Ekman-Larsson have held things together with dependable two-way play. Rielly’s 16 points and 21 blocks stand out, and Ekman-Larsson’s 22 blocks add another layer of stability.
In goal, Anthony Stolarz has been the primary option with 312 saves through 13 games. Joseph Woll has stepped up when needed, including that recent win over the Blues.
For Toronto to smooth out their defensive issues, they’ll need continued help at the position as the season grinds on.
Columbus has quietly become one of the more assertive offensive groups in the league. They’ve scored 60 goals (10th) and piled up 102 assists (14th). On top of that, their 611 shots rank 5th, showing just how aggressive they are getting pucks on net.
Individually, Kirill Marchenko continues to shine with 22 points, including 8 goals and 14 assists. Zach Werenski has matched that impact from the blue line, adding 6 goals and 10 assists. Meanwhile, Dmitri Voronkov’s 16 points give the lineup another reliable layer of support.
Defensively, the Jackets are still a mixed bag. Their 377 hits rank 22nd and 279 blocks sit 18th, so they’re competitive but not overwhelming physically. Their faceoff numbers (594 wins, 564 losses) show the same type of balance — strong enough to compete, not strong enough to dominate.
In net, Elvis Merzlikins has posted 4 wins across 8 starts, while Jet Greaves has taken on the heavier load with 12 games played and 322 saves. Both goalies have been asked to do plenty behind a defense that still leaks high-danger chances.
Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Toronto Maple Leafs bottom line: Toronto’s top-end scoring should give them the edge, but Columbus fires enough pucks to punish any Maple Leafs lapses.
Here is my Maple Leafs Blue Jackets free pick. The Leafs have been piling up goals lately, scoring 3 or more in 4 of their last 5 outings. At the same time, their defensive play has sprung leaks, giving up 4 or more goals in 3 of those games.
That combination of firepower and fragility has turned their matchups into track meets more often than not.
The Blue Jackets have followed a similar script, with 3 of their last 5 games featuring totals of 6 or more. Even so, they’ve also shown they can hang around in tight contests, with 3 recent games decided by just 1 goal. Their ability to stay competitive while still giving up (and producing) offense fits perfectly with a higher total.
With both teams trending toward offensive battles, the over 6.5 stands out as the right play.
All told, Scotiabank Arena has been a prime setting for wide-open hockey, and both clubs have the scoring talent and defensive holes to keep the goals flowing. Therefore, backing the over 6.5 makes the most sense tonight.
