The NHL regular season is rolling, and Monday’s slate brings us a fun East-West matchup: the **Colorado Avalanche vs. Buffalo Sabres** at KeyBank Center. Colorado’s off to a 2-1-1 start, sitting atop the Western Central Division and looking the part of an early contender.
Meanwhile, Buffalo’s staring down an 0-2 hole and badly needs to stop the bleeding before the home crowd turns restless.
Colorado’s been a mixed bag early — a tight 5-4 loss to Dallas, a gritty 2-1 win over Utah — but Jared Bednar’s crew still controls pace better than most teams in October.
With Gabriel Landeskog back leading by example and Brent Burns eating minutes like it’s 2018 again, the Avs look plenty capable of banking another two points tonight.
For the Sabres, it’s been rough sledding under Lindy Ruff (yeah, that one still sounds funny to say). They’ve dropped games to Boston and New York by a combined 7-1 margin. The offense has sputtered out of the gate, though Zach Benson and Justin Danforth have been bright spots in flashes.
If Buffalo wants to make this one competitive, they’ll need their stars — Tage Thompson and Alex Tuch — to finally show up on the scoresheet.

Last season, Colorado took both meetings, outscoring Buffalo narrowly but winning where it mattered. Both of those games sailed over the total, which could be a signal for bettors eyeing the number.

As of this morning, oddsmakers like Colorado’s chances. The Avalanche sit at -164 on the Moneyline and +148 on the -1.5 puck line. Buffalo’s priced at +137 on the ML, with a +1.5 cushion costing -183 — the usual price you pay for desperation.
Colorado’s recent form has been good but not flawless. They’ve alternated wins and losses through four, and while their offense looks dynamic, late-game lapses have burned them.
A 4-5 loss to Dallas showed some cracks, but the narrow win over Utah reminded everyone this team can grind.
Buffalo? Still winless, still searching. They’ve scored just once in their last two games — that’s not going to cut it in this league. Getting shut out 4-0 by the Rangers and then falling 3-1 to Boston has them in early-season panic territory.
The Sabres need to generate offense in bunches to hang with Colorado’s tempo.
Despite the winless start, Buffalo’s flashes of competence keep the faith alive. Their lone bright moment came in a preseason tilt with Detroit that hinted at what could be — aggressive forecheck, balanced scoring, and better puck support.
Jason Zucker leads the team in goals (1) and remains their best finisher right now. On the blue line, Mattias Samuelsson has quietly been a hammer — 5 hits, 5 blocks, and a steadying presence in an otherwise leaky defense.
Between the pipes, Alex Lyon has faced a firing squad, stopping 57 of 64 shots over two games.
Physically, Buffalo’s been there. Beck Malenstyn (8 hits) and Tage Thompson (7 hits, 4 PIMs) are doing the dirty work. The problem is finishing chances. Tuch, Geertsen, and the top line have combined for exactly zero goals so far.
If that doesn’t change soon, the Sabres are headed for another long winter.
The Avs, on the other hand, look like they’ve already found their rhythm. A 2-1 squeaker over Utah was followed by that chaotic 5-4 loss to Dallas, but the core pieces are producing.
Nathan MacKinnon is playing like he’s already in midseason form — 2 goals, 4 assists, and driving play every shift. Martin Necas has surprised with 3 goals in his first three games, giving the top six another finisher.
Defensively, Cale Makar continues to be the heartbeat. His combo of 4 hits and 5 blocks over three games barely tells the story of how much ice time he eats.
Artturi Lehkonen has chipped in 2 goals and 1 helper, rounding out a forward group that’s as balanced as any in the West.
Between the pipes, Scott Wedgewood has been busy but steady — 74 saves on 80 shots. He’s not perfect, but he’s giving them a chance to win every night.
As long as he holds the crease, Colorado should keep stacking points.
Colorado Avalanche vs. Buffalo Sabres bottom line: Colorado’s offense is simply too deep, and Buffalo’s goal scoring has gone missing in action.
Here’s my Avalanche Sabres free pick. The Sabres have been ice-cold in the offensive zone, failing to score in two of their last three outings. Their inability to generate consistent scoring chances has been glaring, especially against top-tier defenses.
Meanwhile, the Avalanche have been grinding out tight games, with their last three decided by a single goal.
That pattern of razor-thin margins points strongly toward a low-scoring battle in Buffalo tonight.
Although Colorado has surrendered five goals twice in its last three games, the Sabres’ lack of finishing touch doesn’t inspire confidence they’ll capitalize.
In fact, Buffalo hasn’t scored more than four goals in any of its past five contests, which speaks volumes about their current slump.
Also, both teams tend to slow the tempo when facing defensive-minded opponents, often leaning on goaltending to dictate the pace. As a result, the conditions are primed for another under-type game.
Given the Sabres’ offensive drought and Colorado’s recent defensive resilience, the under looks like the smarter play here. The line at 6.5 feels slightly inflated considering both teams’ current trends, making Under 6.5 the sharp side to back.
