CLINTON, N.Y.– This Clinton Peewee hockey team is busy practicing for their next game, but even to get this far requires a lot of effort for both parents and players.
“We do try to swap equipment as much as possible or we are looking to actually really get into the point of. Lessen that burden for kind of our youngest groups,” said Clinton Youth Hockey coach Jake Tyksanski.
With skates costing up to $100 or more, and another $100 for a slick stick, parents only need to spend $500 more for pants, pads, and a jersey to watch their little Wayne Gretskys score!
But once out on that frozen sheet, life lessons begin to develop.
“I think the two biggest things are discipline and self-control. You know, you’re working as a team, so you learn, you know, there’s a time and a place for things and.you got to learn discipline,” coach mike Seakan explained.
The Clinton Hockey Alumni skaters have added a lesson learned to the list, generosity, this weekend marks the 6th annual “Clinton Hockey Alumni Weekend” with players from 10 states and as far back as 1969, facing off and raising money for the Clinton youth hockey program. Some of the money helps pay for ice time, travel and just about any aspect for the young skaters. Still, more goes toward ‘skills training’ at a very young age.
“they come up once a week for about half the year, and they do professional coaching, improve our skating.
And it’s definitely had an impact, particularly on the younger youth groups, to just see it and kind of drive home a lot of the work that we, you know, felt was, you know, we weren’t as adept to be able to coach it as somebody that was professional,” Tyksanski said.
Cost for ice time, expanded summer programs and related equipment is also chipped away with the alum’s help.
