What a start to Macklin Celebrini’s career.
Just 7:01 into his NHL debut, the 2024 San Jose Sharks’ No. 1 pick attempted a pass that went off St. Louis Blues’ defenseman Matthew Kessel and into the net.

“It was just a lucky bounce off the D skate,” Celebrini acknowledged.
But it put Celebrini in some hallowed company.
The only first-overall selection to score his first NHL goal faster was Mario Lemieux in 2:59 in 1984. Celebrini was faster than Mike Modano in 8:14 in 1989 and Auston Matthews in 8:21 in 2016.
Initially, Celebrini thought his linemate William Eklund scored: “I was like nice goal, and he was just like, I didn’t score, you did. I thought he was just super excited that he scored, but I guess he was happy for me.”

Celebrini capped off a debut to remember with a highlight-reel pass to Tyler Toffoli for his first-ever assist.

“Definitely,” Toffoli said, on if he expected the pass. “He did the same thing first game preseason we played together. He’s an incredible, incredible talent.”
It was a memorable night for Celebrini and fellow San Jose Sharks’ super prospect Will Smith, despite the 5-4 OT loss.
From their team-up solo warm-up lap to their opening night introductions, San Jose Sharks fans showered them with love.

But despite the storybook start, the ending gnawed at Celebrini.
“It’s cool to get the first of both [goal and assist] for my career,” he said. “But we lost, so it sucks.”

I hope fans such as myself do not get discouraged with last nights loss. As J.D. Vance stated in his podcasts, it is the process that we (as fans) should focus on. Patience would be the word I would go by. This is the first game these players have played together and this was Warso’s first game as a head coach. I think they all did good and bad things. As Teal Town mentioned, it should be a learning experience for all involved. Even though we did not get the win we had hoped, we got something last season we… Read more »
JD Young not Vance. Unless he’s recently started eating cats and dogs…
Yeah, our JD doesn’t lube up couches! Though he might’ve thought about it after Macklin’s first goal last night…
Wish I could give this and Patrick’s comment 5 “+’s”…epic!
You should, my bad. lol!
Ooops, sorry about that. lol.
You either JD Young, or you JD long enough to see yourself become the Vance.
JD Vance > JD young
I was there last night and though there were definitely some empty seats in the “sold out” crowd – I have not seen the Tank that excited or that loud in quite some time. It was awesome to behold. There was a buzz with the fans that I haven’t felt in what feels like forever. Mack’s first goal had us all leaping out of our seats. His first apple was an absolute beauty. I took a more casual fan to the game and we were literally having a conversation where he was like “He JUST turned 18? Is that a… Read more »
Sharks are undefeated… in regulation 😉
Was there too and, yes, this is DEFINITELY different. The game started with a last year’s scenario. Bad defense, besieged Blackwood, rare attempts to make something in OZ, then a random goal (despite Mack’s beauty spinorama it was rather an accident) and almost immediate response by Blues. Last year that would be it. Then 3-4 more goals by Blues and Sharks loose 1:4 or 1:5. But it was last year scenario, not this year! We got 2:1 because of Mack, we got 3:1 because of Guschin (the foul was on him), we got 4:1 because of Goody! First time in… Read more »
