As of 5 a.m. ET, the Capitals are the -150 favorites to beat the Islanders (+125) in today’s NHL matchup at 12:30 p.m. ET from UBS Arena in Belmont Park, N.Y. I predict the Capitals will win in regulation.

While not quite at their best, the Capitals played much better against the Blackhawks on Friday than they have in about two weeks. Considering their AHL-like opponents, that won’t be something they boast about.
That performance, however, won’t matter to the collective after securing the win and seeing their captain tie Gretzky’s all-time goal record in one fewer game.
Everyone, including the Great 8, should be much more relaxed heading into today’s game against an Islanders team with one victory from their previous seven games.
The Islanders’ solitary win in that stretch came on Friday against a Minnesota Wild team that also has one win in the last seven. The Islanders’ sour patch has all but taken them out of playoff contention.
Compare that sullen feeling to what’s going on in the Caps’ camp, who must feel lighter than a feather knowing they have all but locked up the Central Division and will witness their captain make history before the playoffs commence.
Excluding the 3-1 victory over the Wild, who have one of the worst offenses over the last two months, the Islanders allowed at least four goals in six straight games. Knowing their playoff chase is over by all intents and purposes, I can’t see the home team playing desperately enough to offset the Caps’ collective swagger.

Ovechkin would love nothing more than to break the record in front of his home fans in the nation’s capital, but if he scores on the road today, he’ll break the record in the same number of games as the Great One (1,487).
With that added motivation, as if he needs any, I’m not willing to bet against him considering the tidal wave of momentum he rides into UBS Arena with. 
The Ovechkin goals record odds improved dramatically over the last week, with the Great 8 scoring five goals in the last four games, including two against Chicago on Friday. Everyone on his team knows he’s feeling it, and the entire hockey world – including the Great One – is aware of it, too. 
He’ll want this record to fall pronto so he and his teammates can concentrate on the postseason with untold confidence and clear, unencumbered minds. His odds are slightly longer than they were against Chicago, and a winning $10 bet will profit $8.33.

Horvat hasn’t done nearly enough to help his team make the playoffs, with just two assists in the last five games. However, he raised his level against the Caps in the previous two games, posting four assists. I’m backing him as a situational play, expecting that same uptick against a team he shows his best stuff.
