The Boston Bruins are the NHL’s worst team since Feb. 5 with a 3-13-3 record. While they have been the league’s laughingstock in the last two months, that record is not an April Fool’s joke. I’m sure general manager Don Sweeney won’t mind too much, given the Bruins’ chances of landing a top draft pick continually increasing.
Can the Bruins end an eight-game losing streak and extend the Washington Capitals’ skid to four tonight when they meet at TD Garden in Boston (7 p.m. ET, NESN)? We discuss that scenario in our Capitals vs. Bruins, prediction, and player prop picks.
Here are my best Capitals vs. Bruins predictions and player props for tonight’s NHL matchup with my pick confidence based on a 1-to-5-star scale. Be sure to check out the rest of our NHL picks along with our guide on how to bet on NHL.
As of 5 p.m. ET, the  Capitals are the -210 moneyline favorites to beat the Bruins (+190) in tonight’s NHL matchup at 7 p.m. ET from TD Garden in Boston. I predict the Capitals will win in a game that sees five goals or fewer.
Here are the latest Capitals vs. Bruins odds and betting lines from our best live betting sites.
I expect an immeasurably better defensive performance with the Capitals focused on getting back into the win column. In an altogether uncharacteristic performance, the Capitals lost to the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday, allowing eight goals for the first time this season. It doesn’t take a hockey savant to rule out the possibility of that recurring.
It will be back to the fundamentals for Spencer Carbery and Co., and there’s no better team to face when a defensive improvement is required. The Bruins have lost eight successive games, failing to score more than two goals in the last seven. In the 19 games since Feb. 5, Boston scored more than three goals twice.
That offensive anemia is no longer a trend but a way of life for the gutted Bruins.
Despite their inability to score, I expect a more competitive performance from the Bruins in their first home game after a horrific five-game road swing. While I don’t foresee the Capitals winning a lopsided affair, I have no faith in the Bruins’ insipid offense, except for David Pastrnak and the streaking Morgan Geekie.
To get back to winning ways and avoid their first four-game losing streak of the season, the Capitals will be back to their best regarding attention to detail in the defensive end. That should facilitate a 4-1 win, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Caps ice the game with an empty-netter.
Best bet: Under 5.5 goals (-105 via bet365)

Best odds: +115 via bet365 ($10 to win $11.50)
I’m going with yes. Ovi has been alternating scoring and non-scoring games in the last seven, but I like the matchup against a Bruins team that has allowed at least five goals in five of the previous eight games. Ovechkin was excellent against Buffalo in a losing cause, scoring and setting up two.
The Alex Ovechkin goals record odds suggest he’ll break the record this season, and I expect him to get one closer tonight.

McMichael hit the Over on this prop in eight of the last 10 games. While six of those occurrences were two-shot, close shaves, he still represents a reliable pick. McMichael fired at least two shots on goal in three of the last four meetings with Boston and is as consistent in enemy barns, where he broke through the 1.5-shot barrier in four of the previous five.
Best odds: +130 via bet365 ($10 to win $13)

Protas scored twice against the Bruins in the last meeting. While that game occurred in Washington, I fancy him to post at least one point in Beantown. The 24-year-old is the team’s second-leading scorer, notching 65 points in 73 games, a 0.89 point-per-game clip. He’s been even more rampant recently, posting a point in nine of the last 11 games.
During that stretch, Protas has 14 points. bet365 provides the odds with the highest potential payout among our best NHL betting sites

Beauvillier has been inconsistent lately, but a few aspects of this prop pop, like a ball off a New York Yankees’ torpedo bat. Beauvillier hit the Over in four of the last seven games. While a decent return, I’m more drawn to his increased productivity on enemy terrain, where he fired at least two shots in five of the previous eight.
In addition, he often works Boston goalies when he comes across them, with 10 shots in the last four meetings. It’s only a three-star play, as the odds are a bit short for my liking when analyzing his recent overall return.
