Not only is Dakota Joshua close to making his return to the lineup but Thatcher Demko has been spotted on ice with goalie coach Marko Torenius before the Canucks practised Friday at the University of B.C.

Demko as been working his way back from a popliteus muscle injury. The fact he is on the ice with the Canucks goalie coach is good news given that it has been understood he has only been working on his own in the last few weeks.

Still, his progress has been slow, in fits and starts and a timeline for a return remains unknown. It wasn’t until the dawn of training camp that he seemed to finally get some momentum in his recovery

Head coach Rick Tocchet has been talking about Demko putting together “good days” and said Friday that his understanding was that Demko has put a number of good days together of late, but admitted he hadn’t done a check in on the goalie’s progress in a few days.

“I know he’s had some consecutive chunks of good days,” Tocchet said, cautiously. “I think we’re still in that window, yeah, but I don’t know. Maybe it’s a bigger window.”

If there’s any kind of hoped-for return circled on Tocchet’s calendar, he’s definitely not giving it away. It’s a safe bet he won’t play a game until he’s participated in several full practices, so there’s still a fair bit of time yet to come before he makes his hoped-for return.

Demko was out with Torenius ahead of a scheduled Canucks’ practice at the University of B.C. but left the ice before his mates took the ice. He watched practice in his suit, indicating he’ll once again be along for the team’s road trip, which begins Saturday in San Jose.

Demko last played for the Canucks in Game 1 of the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs against the Nashville Predators, when he injured his knee late in the game.
