ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – Saturday, the Canandaigua Knights Youth Hockey team raised money for the American Cancer Society with a “Hockey Fights Cancer” game at the Greater Canandaigua Civic Center.
Through the NHL’s Hockey Fights Cancer fund, 100% of the proceeds went toward cancer research and patient care. Dressed in custom purple jerseys, the athletes represented not only their team on the ice but also the countless individuals impacted by cancer.
Tory Carissimo, the head coach, said it was all about getting his players and the community excited to make a positive impact.
“It really kind of shocked me how much they’ve embraced it, how much they all participated in all the lead-up events and going to the Golisano Children’s Hospital and delivering toys and books and thank you cards for the nursing staff – I mean they’ve really gone all in,” Carissimo said. “Especially thinking that you know, they’re 9 and 10 years old and cancer can be kind of – it’s a hard topic to talk about. It’s scary for them but they’re ready and willing to participate.”
