Montreal is back in the playoff race
The Montreal Canadiens have been playing very well over the last few weeks. They’ve only dropped three of their previous 12 games overall. Last Saturday, the Canadiens put an end to their three-game winning streak with a 2-1 shootout defeat to the Dallas Stars.
Interestingly, each of Montreal’s last four games went to overtime. Against the Stars, Montreal took the lead thanks to Patrik Laine’s power-play goal, but Dallas responded immediately. The Canadiens failed to score in a shootout, and Sam Montembeault stopped one of the Stars’ two attempts.
Montembeault had 34 saves in Dallas. He’s now 15-15-3 with a 2.88 GAA and a .901 save percentage in 2024-25. The Canadiens allow 3.29 goals per game (26th in the NHL) while scoring 2.95 goals in return (tied-17th).

Utah needs more from its offense
The Utah Hockey Club have only won two of their previous ten games overall. During that stretch, they’ve scored just 21 goals. Utah is now 25th in the league in goals for (2.79 per game) and 13th in goals against (2.93).
Utah is coming off Saturday’s 2-1 home loss to the New York Islanders. It was the Hockey Club’s third defeat in four games. Utah took just 22 shots toward New York’s goalie and blew a 1-0 lead, allowing a couple of goals in the third period.
Connor Ingram posted 30 saves against the Islanders in his first appearance since November 18. Ingram fell to 6-5-3 on the season, sporting a troublesome 3.49 GAA and a .877 save percentage. Karel Vejmelka (10-11-3; 2.38 GAA; .916 SV%) is expected to guard the cage against the Canadiens. Utah cannot count on winger Dylan Guenther (G16, A18) and defenseman Robert Bortuzzo (A2).

Insiders Status:
I can’t take the Hockey Club at -170. Dylan Guenther’s injury is a huge blow for Utah, and I mentioned how bad the Hockey Club’s offense has been lately. The Canadiens have improved a lot on both sides of the puck, so I’m backing them at +140. They’ve scored at least three goals in nine of their past 12 outings.
We should see a tight battle, as Utah certainly has weapons to slow the Canadiens down. Karel Vejmelka is having a great season and boasts a 2.25 GAA and a .914 save percentage in four starts this month. Sam Montembeault is 1-1-1 with a 2.97 GAA and a .889 save percentage this month, but he went 8-4-0 with a 2.53 GAA and a .909 SV% in December.
Insiders Status:
I would be shocked by a high-scoring affair. Utah heavily leans on Karel Vejmelka and loves to slow the pace down. Only one of Utah’s previous six contests has seen more than five goals on the scoreboard. Seven of Vejmelka’s last nine starts have gone under the total.
On the other side, five of the Canadiens’ last six games have produced six or fewer goals in total. Montreal is ninth in the league in penalty-killing percentage (82.0%), and Utah ranks 13th in this category (80.8%), so give me the under on the total.
