Montreal Goaltending Standing Tall In Net
The Montreal Canadiens are heading to Utah following a loss at home on Saturday against the Dallas Stars with a final score of 2-1. This loss would break up a three-game win streak the Canadiens had amassed in games prior. Montreal is now heading onto a short two-game road trip before heading back home for a lengthy homestand.
Montreal this season has not been known for their defense and especially not their goaltending. The Canadiens rank 24th overall in goals allowed, allowing an average of 3.29 goals per game. This has been due to their goaltending ranking 27th overall in save percentage at .886. In their last ten games however the Canadiens goals against average has dropped down to 2.20. This has clearly been due to their improved performances in net as their save percentage has increased drastically up to .915 in those last ten games. The offense has kept their season average of scoring but has not been needed in many of these games as the defense has held their opposition to no more than two goals in seven of their last ten.
Sam Montembeault is likely to get the start in net for the Canadiens on Tuesday. Sam Montembeault has a 15-15-3 record in 33 games with a goals against average of 2.88 and a save percentage of .901 this season. Montembeault had a 16-15-9 record in 41 games with a goals against average of 3.14 and a save percentage of .903 in 2023-24.
Utah Offense Falling Apart
The Utah Hockey Club are coming off a loss on Saturday against the New York Islanders with a final score of 2-1. Utah would grab their eighth loss in their last ten games. The Hockey Club is currently on a seven-game home stand with a record at 1-2-0. Utah has not found a win following a singular loss in over a month back on December 12th against Colorado.
Utah’s offense has been lacking all season but has gotten worse in recent games. On the season the Hockey Club sits 25th in the league in scoring, averaging 2.79 goals per game. In their last nine games unfortunately the Utah Hockey Club has only averaged 1.89 goals per game with four of those nine games ending with Utah scoring only one goal. I blame this not on their lack of shots as they have increased their shot total in their last nine games to 28.11 shots per game instead of their season average of 27.21. It has been their shooting percentage that has taken a drop and has been causing them to not find the back of the net. On the season Utah sits 22nd in shooting percentage at 10.2%. In these last nine games however the Hockey Club has an astonishing shooting percentage of only 6.7%.
Karel Vejmelka has been confirmed as the starting goaltender for Utah on Tuesday. Karel Vejmelka has a record of 10-11-3 in 26 games with a goals against average of 2.38 and a save percentage of .916 this season. Vejmelka had a 13-19-2 record in 38 games with a goals against average of 3.35 and a save percentage of .895 in 2023-24.
Insiders Status:
The Montreal Canadiens are 5-0-0 as underdogs in their last 5 games on the road. Sam Montembeault has a 6-2-1 record in 9 games with a goals against average of 2.56 and a save percentage of .902 in his last 9 games. Utah is already struggling to score this season and has been struggling even more as of late. They are now facing a Montreal team that has been playing some great defensive hockey. This just seems like a bad mismatch of two teams going in different directions.
I am taking the Canadiens on the money line.
Insiders Status:
The Utah Hockey Club have an over/under record of 3-7 in their last 10 games. The Montreal Canadiens have an over/under record of 3-5-2 in their last 10 games. Montreal will be dictating most of the scoring in this game as Utah has struggled to score even two goals per game in their last nine. Montreal has done well with scoring but not enough to take us over the total. Do not be surprised if this line drops down to 5.5.
I am siding with the under at 6.
