As with every edition of the IIHF Women’s Hockey Championship, Canada and the U.S. were expected to battle it out for gold and the rivalry lived up to expectations. The Canadian women have won the tournament a record 13 times, while the U.S. has taken home 10 titles. Finland is the favorite to take home the bronze medal.
The tournament comes amid rising tensions between Canada and the U.S., after President Trump imposed strict tariffs on Canadian goods coming through the border. The escalating trade war spurred a huge audience for the recent 4 Nations Face-Off men’s hockey tournament, which Canada won after defeating the U.S. by a score of 3-2 in the final. The IIHF is no doubt hoping for similar buzz and ratings for the women’s tournament.
