It’s rivalry night in Montreal at the 4 Nations Face-Off.
The game all hockey fans have had circled on their calendars is here, as Canada and the USA square off Saturday night for a round-robin game at the tournament. It’s the first time since 2016 that the two rivals are playing in an international best-on-best competition.
Both teams picked up wins to begin the 4 Nations Face-Off. Canada kicked off the festivities on Wednesday night with a 4-3 overtime win over Sweden. After allowing the Swedes to score twice in the third period to tie the game, Mitch Marner beat Filip Gustavsson with a shot to lift the Canadians to the win.

On Thursday, Brady and Matthew Tkachuk propelled the United States to a 6-1 victory over Finland. Both siblings had two goals each as the USA broke out for four goals in the third period, securing three points in the standings.
With the tournament being so short, Saturday night already has championship implications. The USA can clinch a spot in the final next week with a regulation win over Canada. That would give the USA six points and guarantee Mike Sullivan’s team finishes in a top-two spot in the round robin.
Make no mistake — tonight is going to be filled with fireworks, from high-flying rushes to thunderous hits to scrappy scrums after the whistle, and much more.
The Sporting News is providing updates and highlights from the Canada vs. USA round-robin game at the 4 Nations Face-Off.
4 NATIONS FACE-OFF HQ
(All times Eastern)
9:09 p.m.: After 20 minutes, it’s a 1-1 in what has been an incredible game to start. The expectations were through the roof entering this game — somehow, the USA and Canada greatly surpassed the anticipation. Three fights in the first nine seconds kickstarted an electric 20 minutes from the Bell Centre, with goals by Connor McDavid and Jake Guentzel getting both sides on the board. Shots on goal favored the U.S., 8-6.
9:07 p.m.: Back to even strength as Guentzel exits the box. The USA has Hellebuyck to thank for the game staying tied, as that was an excellent power play for Canada.
9:06 p.m.: Seth Jarvis finds Brayden Point all alone in front of the net for a quality chance, but Connor Hellebuyck flashes the pad to make the stop. Moments later, Hellebuyck makes another sensational save, denying Point again as he tried to jam it on the short side.
9:01 p.m.: Canada gets its second power play of the night as Jake Guentzel trips up Josh Morrissey with 3:13 left in the first period.
9 p.m.: Drew Doughty levels Jack Hughes, and Brady Tkachuk responds seconds later by nailing Doughty behind the Canada net. There is no shortage of physicality in this one.

9 p.m.: Back to even strength as the USA can’t convert on the power play. A couple of real good stops by Binnington keeps it a tie game, including a late stop on Auston Matthews from a feed by Matt Boldy.
Boldy comes off the bench to set up Matthews for probably the best chance of that power play pic.twitter.com/cvPHlizlXl
8:58 p.m.: Jake Guentzel nearly gets his second of the night with a loose puck finding his stick at the top of the crease, but his shot is denied by Binnington. That’s a heck of a save from the Canada goaltender.
8:56 p.m.: Dylan Larkins dishes a pass to Matt Boldy on a 2 on 1, but Sidney Crosby hooks Boldy, prohibiting the USA winger from getting a shot off. USA will head to its first power play with 7:06 remaining in the first.
Canada 1, USA 1
8:50 p.m.: GOAL! It’s all even in Montreal as Jake Guentzel ties the game with 9:45 left in the first period. Jack Eichel dishes out a pretty pass to Guentzel, and the USA forward beats Jordan Binnington along the ice. That’s one that the Canada goaltender is going to want back, 1-1 game.

8:49 p.m.: Charlie McAvoy lays a thunderous hit on Connor McDavid as he tried to enter the offensive zone. McAvoy made heavy contact with Sidney Crosby earlier in the game as well.

8:47 p.m.: There’s still plenty of physicality during play and shoving after the whistles, but things have died down quite a bit after the crazy first minute to the madness.
Canada 1, USA 0
8:39 p.m.: GOAL! Who else but Connor McDavid! Drew Doughty hits McDavid in stride in the neutral zone, the Canada forward uses his blazing speed to get around Charlie McAvoy and he backhands a shot over Connor Hellebuyck’s shoulder. The Bell Centre explodes and it’s 1-0 Canada 5:31 into the contest.

8:36 p.m.: Connor Helelbuyck stones Mark Stone from point-blank range after. aloos puck found the Canadian winger, and then the USA goalie stops Thomas Harley on the rebound attempt.
8:33 p.m.: Canada can’t convert on the power play as USA does a great job of getting sticks into passing lanes.
8:30 p.m.: Miller got an extra two minutes for cross-checking during the scrum, so that minor will be served by Kyle Connor. Canada goes on the power play just nine seconds in.
8:28 p.m.: WHAT’S ONE MORE?! After play finally gets underway with the first two fights underway, a scrum in front of Connor Hellebuyck results in J.T. Miller and Colton Parayko getting into a fight. Just nine seconds in and there have been three fights already.
WE’VE GOT A THIRD FIGHT NINE SECONDS INTO THE GAME

8:27 p.m.: ANOTHER FIGHT! This time it’s Brady Tkachuk that goes at it with Sam Bennett off the ensuing faceoff. Both Tkachuk brothers waste no time getting into fights, and the two are loving it. The Bell Centre is rocking.

8:25 p.m.: Right off the opening faceoff, we have a fight! Matthew Tkachuk and Brandon Hagel drop the mitts and get into a quality scrap, much to the delight of the Montreal crowd.

8:25 p.m.: Puck is down, and the USA-Canada contest is a go.
8:20 p.m.: Plenty of boos can be heard during the U.S. national anthem from the crowd at the Bell Centre.

7:45 p.m.: Here are the lines for Canada and the USA tonight. USA head coach Mike Sullivan is keeping Brady and Matthew Tkachuk with Jack Eichel after making that adjustment mid-game against the Finns. For Canada, Sam Bennett draws in for Travis Konecny, while Thomas Harley is set to be on the third pairing with Drew Doughty.

7:20 p.m.: Cale Makar won’t suit up tonight for Canada. He remains available for the tournament, but Thomas Harley has now been added to the roster and will play against the USA.
6:50 p.m.: While the Sweden-Finland matchup featured two new goaltenders on each side, the USA and Canada are running it back with their starts from their first games. Jordan Binnington gets the net for Canada after making 23 saves on 26 shots against Sweden. Connor Hellebuyck is in goal for the USA after allowing just one goal on 21 shots.
6:35 p.m.: A big story to watch for this game is the status of Cale Makar. The Canada defenseman is dealing with an illness that kept him out of practice on Friday, but he returned to skate on Saturday ahead of the game. He’s considered to be a game-time decision.
With Shea Theodore out of the tournament after suffering an upper-body injury in the opener against Sweden, Thomas Harley was brought to Montreal and will be available to dress if Makar can’t go. However, if Makar can play, Harley won’t be added to the roster.
