Canada is taking on Switzerland in its first hockey game of the women's Olympic tournament at Rho Arena in Milan, Italy.
Canada's first game against Finland was postponed, while the Swiss beat Czech Republic in overtime in their opener.
P2 0:00 – Canada 1, Switzerland 0
Through two periods, Canada leads by one over Switzerland. Natalie Spooner’s goal gives Canada the lead.
But Switzerland is very much in this game, courtesy of goalie Saskia Maurer. She is standing tall in between the pipes.
One period to go in this round-robin game.
P2 1:12 – Canada 1, Switzerland 0
Jocelyne Larocque fires a blasting shot from the shot. Saskia Maurer is seeing and stopping everything.
A stick save deflected wide keeps this a one-goal lead for Canada.
P2 2:04 – Canada 1, Switzerland 0
At the final stoppage before the second period ends, Canada is leading and is dominating in shots on goal 25-3 over Switzerland.
To Shelby’s point, just a heroic effort from Swiss goalie Saskia Maurer. Both teams are looking for one last push before the second frame concludes.
Switzerland's Alina Muller just dangled through half the Canadian team before just getting tangled up in the corner. The Swiss are putting on the pressure and this game easily can be tied any minute. The Swiss are not backing down. Despite a 98.9 per cent chance of winning, Canada is just hanging on.
P2 4:39 – Canada 1, Switzerland 0
Alina Muller, take a bow. The Swiss forward showcases her deking ability, nearly going end-to-end for a goal. There wasn‘t that much of a scoring chance in the end but Muller’s stickhandling certainly wowed the crowd here at Milano Rho Ice Hockey Arena.
P2 6:34 – Canada 1, Switzerland 0
Jennifer Gardiner, making her Olympic debut, has a cross-ice pass to Blayre Turnbull, who skates in all alone. But Turnbull’s shot doesn‘t get by Saskia Maurer who makes another big save.
Maurer’s goaltending is why Switzerland is only down one.
This is Natalie Spooner’s fourth Olympic Games. She is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and won silver at Pyeongchang 2018.
At the IIHF World Championship, Spooner has 11 medals, including three gold. She is one of Canada’s most successful players and continues to deliver in the big moments on the international stage, like here today to start the Milan Cortina Games.
P2 10:08 – Canada 1, Switzerland 0
Wow! Marie-Philip Poulin came blazing toward the net and fired a wicked shot. It just sails wide of Saskia Maurer.
Poulin just can’t buy a goal. Feels like a matter of time before she scores.
Finally. It was only a matter of time.
Natalie Spooner of Scarborough, Ontario, is the first goal scorer of the tournament for Canada.
P2 12:58 – Canada 1, Switzerland 0
Canada is on the board. There’s a scramble in front of the net but it was Natalie Spooner’s shot that squeaked by Saskia Maurer to grant her the power-play goal.
Marie-Philip Poulin and Sarah Fillier are credited with the assists. Finally, Canada takes the lead.
P2 13:17 – Switzerland, Canada 0
Muller gets handed an illegal hit penalty. Canada back to the power play.
P2 13:41 – Switzerland 0, Canada 0
Another 2-on-1 for Switzerland that doesn’t lead to a goal. Credit the defense of Erin Ambrose, who dives to prevent the cross-ice pass.
Likely saved a goal by Switzerland. It’s been a bit of a flat start to the period for Canada.
P2 15:07 – Switzerland 0, Canada 0
Canada spent a little bit too much time in their own end on that sequence. They nearly gifted the puck to Switzerland but luckily for them, there was no quality scoring chance and they were able to clear the zone.
Ann-Renee Desbiens, Canada’s goalie, was certainly tested.
P2 16:44 – Switzerland 0, Canada 0
Sarah Fillier takes advantage of a careless Switzerland turnover in the attacking zone. She fires a wrist shot but it misses the net by a lot.
Canada is pressing, trying to gain the early goal advantage. But Switzerland is hanging in this game.
P2 19:19 – Switzerland 0, Canada 0
Wow! Marie-Philip Poulin nearly scored a point blank, power-play goal but the shot is blocked.
Switzerland kills off the penalty and we’re back to even strength.
P2 20:00 – Switzerland 0, Canada 0
The second period begins as Canada has 1:01 left on the power play.
I thought Renata Fast was one of Canada‘s best players in the first period. She was effective on the back end with her zone break outs while even getting involved in the offensive zone with a glorious backhand scoring chance.
Fast led all Canadian players with shots on goal (4) and total ice time (9:37).
Switzerland 0, Canada 0
Canada's Renata Fast leads all skaters with four shots on goal and 9:37 of ice time.
Maurer! Diving everywhere! Standout of the period, for sure. The Swiss need to give her a break if they want this to continue to be close.
