The NHL will take a two-week hiatus and there will be no All-Star game this year. Instead, this round-robin, best-on-best international men’s hockey tournament features NHL players from the United States, Canada, Finland and Sweden.
A win in regulation counts as three points, a win in overtime or a shootout counts as two and a loss in overtime or a shootout earns one point. The two teams with the most points at each round will advance to face each other in the championship game.
The games will take place Feb. 12-20 with host cities Montreal, Canada and Boston Massachusetts. USA and Canada are the co-favorites.
Led by Edmonton Oilers' superstar Connor McDavid, the Canadians are lethal on the attack. There is no shortage of star power with Nathan MacKinnon, Sidney Crosby, Mitch Marner and Sam Reinhart, among others. Blueliner captain Cale Makar can steal the spotlight. The Canadiens have five players who rank in the top 11 in 5-on-5 points.
With McDavid and Mackinnon jumping the boards, the Swedes could be in for a long night in Montreal.
But questions loom large about their ability to defend in the front of the net. Either Adin Hill (.900% save percentage) or Jordan Binnington (.897%) will get the start in goal. It will be apparent early whether they can handle the moment, or force Canada to ignite its nitrous oxide-like offense.

The Swedes will be guided by Toronto Maple Leafs right wing William Nylander, who will need to raise his play as he tackles the best in the world. He touts the second-most goals in the NHL with 33. Jesper Bratt and Lucas Raymond are the only members inside the top 25 in overall points.
With their top forwards slumping, Sweden’s key is to keep this a low-scoring contest by bogging up the ice. They cannot afford a barrage from the host the nation.
Sweden will likely turn to Linus Ullmark in goal with Jacob Markstrum injured. Ullmark touts a 12-9-2 record with a 2.49 goals against average and a .915% save percentage.
A win for the Swedes to open the 4-Nations Face-Off would send shockwaves all the way back to Stockholm.
