Canada advances to women’s Olympic hockey semifinals as Marie-Philip Poulin makes history
At Friday’s practice, head coach Troy Ryan said he initially anticipated Poulin would skate in a non-contact jersey. But after extended conversations with the team’s medical staff, she was cleared to be a full participant. That Poulin was able to return less than a week after a heavy hit by Czech forward Kristýna Kaltounková is a testament to the work Canada’s captain does behind the scenes.
“She trains like nobody else,” said Ryan. “So she puts herself in these situations where she can rebound from situations like this and still find ways to contribute and have an impact.”
Canada has tinkered a lot with their lines, at times out of necessity with Poulin out, and rolled out a star-studded trio on Saturday: Daryl Watts, Sarah Fillier and Marie-Philip Poulin.
Troy Ryan said Canada entered the tournament wanting to keep those three spread out in the top six to give the team a bit more depth at the forward position. But with the line of Emily Clark, Blayre Turnbull and Laura Stacey clicking — and producing with four goals in the tournament — Ryan felt Canada could load up its top line as the tournament transitions to the knockout stage.
Before the game, Poulin called Watts and Fillier “dynamic” with unbelievable skill.
“They see each other very well on that ice,” she said. “Game after game, they’re just getting better, and they’re just getting that connection together, and it’s been great to see.”
Fillier has been dangerous in Milan. She’s a naturally gifted distributor but also has a quick release and is tied for the co-lead in goals (3) for the Canadians.
German goalie Sandra Abstrieter made 38 saves to keep the game relatively close. In the third period, Franziska Feldmeier made history, scoring the first-ever goal by a German against Canada in the 10th meeting between the two countries.
It was the first goal that No. 2 netminder Emerance Maschmeyer allowed in a major international competition, dating back to the 2024 world championship quarterfinal versus Sweden.
Two more wins. That’s all it takes for Marie-Philip Poulin to get another Olympic gold.
It would give Canada’s captain her fourth career Olympic gold. That would tie her with Jayna Hefford, Hayley Wickenheiser and Caroline Ouellette.
Those three women are the only players to win four Olympic gold medals. Poulin is trying to join that elite list.
Below are the women‘s hockey quarterfinal results of the first three games played here at the Milan Cortina Games:
USA and Sweden will play in the semifinals. Canada awaits the winner of Finland and Switzerland.
In the history of the women’s hockey tournament at the Winter Olympics, Canada is 7-0.
They are looking to go 8-for-8 in the semifinals with a win on Monday at the Milan Cortina Games.
Here's a look at the remaining knockout round schedule (all times ET):
Quarterfinals – Today
Semifinals – Monday
Bronze medal game – Thursday
Gold medal game – Thursday
Canada has to play the winner of Finland and Switzerland. That quarterfinal game is taking place for the nightcap at Rho Hockey Arena tonight.
Canada played Finland at the 2025 IIHF Women’s World Hockey Championship, routing them 8-1. Canada just beat Switzerland 4-0 to open the Milan Cortina Games women’s hockey tournament.
Emerance Maschmeyer, Canada’s starting goalie, didn‘t have to do much to get the victory against Germany. She made 10 saves on 11 shots, giving up just one goal, a shorthanded on the Canada power play.
Whenever Germany did get scoring chances, Maschmeyer looked comfortable in between the pipes. Canada needs her to be incredible against better competition.
Marie-Philip Poulin played 12:41 of ice time tonight in the quarterfinals. She definitely is saving herself for more important games as she eases her way back in after missing two games due to a lower-body injury.
Whenever Poulin was on the ice, she was effective. Backchecking, taking pucks away from the Germans. And of course, scoring on the power play to tie a Canadian women’s hockey goal record.
Talk about Captain Clutch!
Julia Gosling, you have company. Sarah Fillier scored on the power play today.
She now is tied with Gosling atop the Canadian goals leaderboard with three in five games played.
Claire Thompson (above) led Team Canada today in shots with five. She was a +1 and scored one of Canada’s five goals in the resounding win.
Ella Shelton (18:43) and Renata Fast (18:23) both eclipsed 18 minutes of ice time for Canada. Both were very effective on the backend, preventing Germany from getting any structure in the attacking zone.
The chance at a gold medal defense remains alive for Team Canada. Two more wins and Canada has its sixth career Olympic gold medal in women’s hockey at the Winter Olympics.
No easy task though with the formidable Team USA looming in a potential gold medal game rematch.
Canada had their first game of the Milan Cortina Games postponed due to an outbreak of norovirus on Team Finland. Then, Marie-Philip Poulin had to miss two games due to a lower-body injury.
Time and time again, this Canadian team shows resilience. As players like Blayre Turnbull and Jennifer Gardiner said before the tournament, adaptability has been the major theme of this group. It’s paying off as Canada is back in the semifinals of the women’s hockey tournament.
Below are the final stats from today’s Canada win over Germany:

Canada remains undefeated in the quarterfinals of the Olympic women’s hockey tournament. They are a perfect 8-0, dating back to women’s hockey’s introduction at the Winter Olympics at Nagano 1998.
As the fans are leaving Rho Hockey Arena, they are being serenaded to a Canadian institution. The “Good Ol Hockey Game” by Canadian singer-songwriter Stompin' Tom Connors.
Very fitting choice from the in-arena DJ.
Poulin has now scored in five Olympics tournaments, tying the most alongside U.S. Hilary Knight and Canadians Hayley Wickenheiser and Jayna Hefford.
As the Canadian players raise their sticks at center ice, they get boisterous applause from the Canada supporters in attendance.
Canadian flags are being waved with pride around Rho Hockey Arena.
These fans do not want to leave!
