As the NHL regular season gets rolling, the Calgary Flames travel to Salt Lake City to face the Utah Mammoth at the Delta Center. Both clubs sit at 1-2-0, so yeah — this one matters for morale.
Catch it live on ESPN+ as two struggling squads scrap for a much-needed early-season win.
For Calgary, head coach Ryan Huska has work to do. The Flames have stumbled out of the gate, dropping games to Vegas, St. Louis, and Vancouver. Sitting dead last in the Western Pacific isn’t exactly the statement they wanted to make. So tonight’s matchup feels like a chance to reset — or risk slipping further behind.
Meanwhile, the Utah Mammoth, guided by André Tourigny, aren’t exactly flying either.
A win over Nashville provided a spark, but it was quickly doused by a sloppy loss to Chicago. Playing at home should help, and they’ll need that edge if they want to stay competitive in the West.
Historically, the Mammoth have dominated this matchup — sweeping all three games against Calgary last season and outscoring them by nearly three goals a pop.
With both sides desperate to grab momentum, expect some urgency (and probably a few penalties) in this one.

Oddsmakers have sided with Utah here, installing them as -212 favorites, while the Flames sit as +172 dogs. Given the Mammoth’s sweep last year, it’s not surprising.
The puck line lists Utah at +1.5 (+123) and Calgary -1.5 (-150), hinting that books see a closer game than that moneyline might suggest.
For Calgary, the trend is troubling — three straight losses, each by two or more goals. Their lone win came by a single tally over Edmonton. Clearly, this team’s margin for error is paper-thin right now.
As for Utah, they’ve shown flashes. A solid win over Nashville looked promising before tight losses to Chicago and Colorado cooled things off. Still, those close games prove they can hang with anyone when they’re dialed in.
Consistency, though, remains their biggest obstacle.
The **Utah Mammoth** have been a mixed bag — competitive one night, flat the next. Their 1-2 record includes a gutsy win over Nashville, but defeats against Chicago and Colorado highlight lingering defensive gaps.
Offensively, Dylan Guenther has been their bright spot with two goals and two assists through three games. He’s been the team’s spark plug, and when he’s buzzing, Utah’s offense looks dangerous.
Between the pipes, Karel Vejmelka has split his two starts, going 1-1 with 46 saves and just four goals allowed. That’s respectable, though he’ll need help from his blue line. Vitek Vanecek, in limited action, stopped 11 of 13 shots but took the loss in his lone outing.
Physically, Utah’s been active — racking up 56 hits and 44 blocks across three games.
That effort shows commitment, but if they can pair that grit with smarter zone coverage, they’ll start closing out these tight ones.
The Flames have been stuck in neutral early, dropping three of their last four. Their defeats — to Vegas, St. Louis, and Vancouver — weren’t even close. Only a narrow win over Edmonton has kept them from staring down an ugly 0-4 start.
Up front, Matt Coronato leads the way with three points in as many games. Veterans Nazem Kadri and Joel Farabee have chipped in two assists apiece, but this offense still feels one spark short of clicking.
Defensively, Blake Coleman has tried to set the tone physically with 11 hits, though the unit as a whole has leaked too many odd-man rushes. In goal, Dustin Wolf has been busy — 77 saves on 89 shots across three starts. His 12 goals allowed tell the story of a goaltender hung out to dry too often.
Lastly, Calgary’s power play remains an eyesore — still searching for its first goal of the season. That drought can’t continue if they expect to hang around in the standings.
With the schedule still young, the Flames have time to steady the ship. But that starts tonight, against a Mammoth team that’s already proven they can beat them — and beat them badly.
The Mammoth have history and home ice; the Flames have urgency. Something’s gotta give.
Calgary Flames vs. Utah Mammoth bottom line: Two teams desperate for direction meet in Utah, but only one leaves feeling better about it.
Here is my Flames Mammoth free pick. The Calgary Flames have been leaking goals like a sieve lately, allowing four or more in four of their last five outings. Their blue line hasn’t found its rhythm yet, and the penalty kill continues to look out of sync.
As a result, opposing teams have been able to control possession and generate high-danger chances with ease — a trend that doesn’t bode well heading into this matchup.

Conversely, the Utah Mammoth have shown a knack for keeping games close, even when they’re outshot. They’ve seen three of their last five games decided by just one goal, largely because their offense keeps them in it until the final horn.
Their transition play has improved, and they’ve been capitalizing on rebounds and second-chance opportunities.
With both clubs leaning toward offense over structure, this one has all the makings of a shootout.
Calgary’s goaltending tandem has been inconsistent, and Utah’s aggressive forecheck should create plenty of chaos in front of the crease. Considering the Flames’ defensive lapses and the Mammoth’s scrappy, relentless style, the total sitting at six feels like a gift.
Expect back-and-forth action, plenty of scoring chances, and a good shot at this game sailing over the number.
