Buffalo has stumbled out of the gate under Lindy Ruff, sitting at 5-7-4 and looking for answers after four straight losses. Their most recent stumble came in a 5-2 defeat to Utah, where defensive breakdowns continued to pile up.
Colorado, meanwhile, looks like a wagon already. Jared Bednar’s group owns an 11-1-5 record and continues to steamroll opponents with depth, speed, and a relentless forecheck that hasn’t cooled off once this month.
And judging by how sharp Colorado has looked, Buffalo doesn’t just need a good night — they need their best one of the season.

The Sabres have dropped four straight and have struggled to generate momentum despite flashes of competent play. Their 5-2 loss to Utah was another reminder that they simply haven’t put together a full 60 lately.
Colorado, on the other hand, keeps stacking wins. They handled Anaheim 4-1 and survived a tight 5-4 contest against Vancouver, showing they can win in any style the game demands.

Colorado’s forward group has been lethal, leading the NHL with 68 goals and 118 assists. Their offensive rhythm has been nearly impossible to disrupt, especially on home ice.
Nathan MacKinnon has been playing like he wants another Hart Trophy, racking up 32 points in 17 games. His blend of speed, strength, and shot volume continues to separate him from almost everyone else in the league.
Cale Makar has matched that energy on the back end with 31 blocks and 17 assists. His ability to quarterback the attack while shutting down top forwards is exactly why this team looks unstoppable right now.
Scott Wedgewood has handled the load confidently with 10 wins in 14 games. His 315 saves have kept the Avalanche stable whenever opponents push back late.
Buffalo continues to search for consistency after losing four of their last five, giving up nearly four goals per game in that stretch. Defensive-zone coverage remains the biggest issue, and it’s been costing them early and often.
Their offensive numbers haven’t kept pace either, sitting 21st in goals scored and 23rd in assists. Isak Rosen has provided a spark with two recent goals, while Alex Tuch and Tage Thompson continue to anchor the top scoring options.

On the other side, the Sabres’ defensive issues continue to pile up. They’ve allowed 3 or more goals in 4 of their last 5 outings, and breakdowns in their own zone have been far too frequent.
Against a high-powered offense like Colorado, those mistakes tend to end up in the back of the net.
With Colorado firing on all cylinders and Buffalo leaking chances, the over 6.5 stands out as the strongest play on the board.
Additionally, both teams have shown a willingness to trade chances, and neither goaltending situation inspires a ton of confidence. This matchup sets up perfectly for a back-and-forth, high-scoring game that clears the number.
