Western Michigan and Boston University are set up for a historic 2025 NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey National Championship at Enterprise Center in St. Louis.
WMU enters the championship game riding a wave of momentum after defeating Denver 3-2 in double OT, highlighted by a game-winning goal from sophomore forward Owen Michaels just 30 seconds into the second overtime period.
The Broncos dominated early, outshooting Denver 46-22, with standout performances from forward Alex Bump and freshman goaltender Hampton Slukynsky, who stood tall in crucial moments.
Boston University arrives after a commanding postseason run featuring wins over Ohio State, Cornell, and Penn State.
BU brings a deep, balanced roster that features high-end NHL talent and scoring depth. The Terriers, known for their elite puck movement, defeated Cornell 3-2 and then knocked off Penn State to reach their first national final since 2015.

The second period was a wild one.
Both teams traded chances, with each team scoring a goal. Western struck first and put some distance between them and the Terriers with yet another rebound goal, but for the second time in the game, BU got a goal off of a puck that goalie Hampton Slukynsky didn’t fully trap.
The game is getting tighter, but both teams are still generating dangerous looks. Right now, BU seems to have the sharper goalie, but Slukynsky is battle-tested and could be tough to beat in the third.
This game has had just about everything you could want, and now WMU has 14 seconds left on their power play to start the third period.
The Broncos have to taste it a little bit, 20 minutes from their first national championship, but nothing is ever certain at the Frozen Four.
This will be a fantastic finish to a great hockey game.

WMU has certainly been the better overall team and the score refllects that, but BU being only one goal behind shows how fierce their performance has been.

No goals so far in this second period, but Broncos have continued to attack. It’s certainly not lopsided, but WMU have been better at using their stamina and physicality to get up the ice.

Just to clarify.
No player for either team had more than two shots, which were WMU’s Cole Crusberg-Roseen and BU’s Cole Hutson.
Western Michigan did not shrink from the spotlight in their first-ever national championship game appearance. The Broncos have a 2-1 lead thanks to their hard-driving game that is keeping BU on its heels more than they’re used to.
That said, the Terriers have so much skill that they’re a threat to score in a blink if WMU makes a mistake. Traffic in front has been key to both teams’ first goals.
Western has been better on the interior in the game, but BU still has more to give there and I think they can find ways to break through.
This has been an especially entertaining game with two teams that clearly deserve to be here. It’s an incredible showcase of college hockey played at its highest level.
That was something. WMU leads 2-1 after 20 minutes, but it it certainly anyone’s game.
Western Michigan’s ability to get to the interior and make things uncomfortable for BU a major factor. Looking for high-slot plays, rebounds, crashing the net hard. They are playing to their identity to a tee.
