Boston University secured a spot in the NCAA Hockey Championship game with a 3-1 win over Penn State.
With the win, BU ends Penn State’s Cinderella run that included a dramatic OT win over UConn in the Allen Regional Final.
Cole Eiserman and Jack Hughes scored crucial goals for BU, with Eiserman’s goal coming on a two-on-one breakaway chance with Cole Hutson. Mikhail Yegorov made 32 saves, allowing only one goal.
Penn State’s Nicolas Degraves scored their lone goal, assisted by Ben Schoen and Simon Mack.
The win sets up a championship game matchup against Western Michigan, who won their semifinal game in double overtime.
Recap the live updates, scores, and highlights from BU vs. Penn State.
Boston University, with 14 NHL Draft picks, seemed to have more of a skill advantage, but Penn State hung with them and gave themselves a chance.
The Nittany Lions only have three draft picks, but maximized all their talent in a close game.
Ultimately, the second period was their undoing, with BU getting a pair of key goals, the last of which was from freshman sensations Cole Hutson (WSH) and Cole Eiserman (NYI) connecting for a beauty as they have so many times.
Freshman goalie Mikhail Yegorov (NJD) was also a major difference-maker.
Now the Terriers get a tough test with first-time Frozen Four participant Western Michigan coming off of a two-overtime thriller. Get ready for a great championship game on Saturday.
BU is headed to the NCAA Hockey Championship game, where they will take on the Western Michigan Broncos.
BU scored two unanswered goals before PSU were able to score their first goal of the game. A Cole Hutson and Cole Eiserman two-on-one breakaway goal was the highlight of the game.
Mikhail Yegorov had a great game in goal for BU, making 32 saves and allowing only one goal.

Penn State has taken a handful of shots in the last minute.
Yegorov has been able to deflect them all, but PSU is really putting on the pressure.

Boston is up 2-0 and looking to put this away to head to the NCAA Championship game.
But, as we saw in the other Frozen Four game, things can change quickly.
Penn State will certainly be pushing.

Boston University gets on the board first as Matt Copponi puts up a shot that Sergeev lost, which was then put in the net by Jack Hughes.
Expectations are this game will pick up this period.
Penn State and Boston University has been a wide-open, back-and forth game. Both teams have allowed a few great chances, but the goalies have been excellent to start.
Mikhail Yegorov (NJD) for BU and Arsenii Sergeev (CGY) for Penn State have faced a number of clean scoring chances, but have made the big saves.
You can see both teams have a lot of skill and pace to them, which resulted in 18 shots on goal between the two teams. BU might have a bit more depth of skill, but Penn State clearly has the ability to push back.

About halfway through the first period and the teams are settling in. Boston University has a slight edge in quality right now.
However, we’ve seen Penn State turn a game on its head at any given moment.
Both teams have had a few great chances, no goals yet, though.
There has been a lot of attacking to start the game.
Matt Copponi sent the puck into the pads of PSU goaltender Arsenii Sergeev.
