The Boston Bruins won three in a row on the road immediately after axing former head coach Jim Montgomery, galvanized by their former head coach’s dismissal. Seeing an uptick in results and performances is almost customary after canning a coach. But things haven’t been as rosy on the road since.
Under interim head coach Joe Sacco, the Bruins have lost five of their last seven road games. On Thursday, they will play at Madison Square Garden (7 p.m. ET, ESPN+), facing the New York Rangers, who have had the second-worst points percentage (.250) since Nov. 20.
The Bruins enter the contest as favorites, primarily due to the Blueshirts’ wholesale incompetence. While I actually think the Rangers have a chance of winning this one, I don’t trust either team enough to back them.
That’s why our Bruins vs. Rangers prediction focuses on Artemi Panarin and Brad Marchand.

Remember when the Rangers were among the Stanley Cup odds favorites? The wheels have since fallen off, and the Rangers have lost four in a row overall and four consecutive at Madison Square Garden.
Take a moment to recognize what rock bottom looks like. At this point, it feels like the only way this wayward ship’s course can be corrected is by handing Peter Laviolette his pink slip.
Even though things couldn’t be more bleak in the Big Apple, there is a player prop worth sinking your teeth into. Artemi Panarin is the only player on the Bluehsirts who consistently contributes offensively.
While he has just one assist in the last four games, the Breadman usually delivers at Madison Square Garden, where he’s registered at least one helper in eight of the last 11 home games, including five of the previous seven.
He’s been excellent against the Bruins recently, notching seven points in the last three head-to-heads (four goals, three assists). I also like Panarin to register at least four shots, as he has averaged 6.67 per game in the previous three against Boston.
However, as the Bruins have conceded the second-fewest shots on the road since Nov. 20 (25.1), I’m refraining from pulling the trigger. If Panarin registers at least one assist, a $10 wager will profit $8.70.

Brad Marchand endured a drop-off in shot production during the festive period, hitting the Under on this total in three straight games from Dec. 21 to Dec. 27.
Whether focus was an issue or he was preoccupied with the prospect of receiving a lump of coal in his stocking (which I almost guarantee he did), Marchand missed the mark.
He has hit the Over in the two games since, attempting 10 shots. And while he’s only hit the Over in two of the previous five games, he fired at least three shots on goal in eight of the last 12.
I’m also drawn to Marchand’s output in hostile buildings. On the road, the Bruins’ captain hit the Over in eight of the last 12 games. A winning $10 bet will profit $9.09.
