Western Michigan had its mettle tested in the semifinals but proved why it a No. 1 seed, surviving double OT. Look for the Broncos to earn their first ever title at Boston U's expense, per our hockey betting picks.

My analysis
The Western Michigan Broncos almost let their opportunity to play on Saturday night slip when they saw their 2-0 third-period lead evaporate against the Denver Pioneers. Thanks to a double-overtime goal by Owen Michaels, the Broncos now have the chance for their first National Championship in program history.
The Boston University Terriers put together a strong effort against Penn State, defeating them by the score of 3-1, and now look to win the program’s first title since 2009.
These programs are very different. Western Michigan plays a heavier game and can really dominate physically, but Boston University has some game-breakers like Cole Hutson and Cole Eiserman who can take over at any given moment.
That said, the Broncos put together a dominant performance in their semifinal game, outshooting the defending champion Denver by a 47-22 margin. The Broncos had so many scoring chances throughout the game but weren’t able to run away with it.
Hampton Slukynsky, despite not being tested all that much, was impressive in the win on Thursday night, stopping 20 of the 22 shots he faced. He’s beyond composed in the blue paint and doesn’t seem to fear the big moments. The Broncos only allow 2.0 goals against per game and their penalty kill is at a 87.4%, so it’s going to be tough for BU to score goals.
The Broncos are the second-highest scoring team in all of the NCAA, averaging 3.93 goals per game, and rely heavily on guys like Alex Bump. Bump has 23 goals and 47 points in the 41 games he’s played this season, and to me, he could be the difference-maker in this game.
I think Western Michigan has the edge. They’re the No. 1 seed for a reason.

Jonny Lazarus has loved hockey for as long as he can remember. After his Division I playing career at UMass-Amherst and Mercyhurst University came to an end in 2020, he transitioned from being a player to working in the media. He might be young in his career, but he has made appearances in numerous places like the NHL, and Bleacher Report, and this season he will be doing color commentary for a selection of UMass-Amherst hockey games.
