Boston University wasn’t supposed to be here, but the Terriers beat Ohio State, dodged a matchup with Michigan State, and bested Cornell, giving them a two-game winning streak. To the Terriers’ credit, they rank an impressive fourth in goals per game and on the power play, but that’s about where the positive ends. They are 35th (of 64) in goals allowed per game and 37th in the penalty kill.
The silver lining for BU has been freshman goalie Mikhail Yegorov ranks 13th in goals allowed (2.04) and seventh in save percentage (93.1%) over 16 games played. The Terriers probably don’t get this hot down the stretch with their previous goalie, Mathieu Caron, still in the net. Caron’s save percentage (89.9%) ranks 68th.
🏒 Goals per game: 3.54
🥅 Opponent goals per game: 3.00

Penn State scored an impressive win over No. 3 Maine in the opening round, toppling them by a 5-1 margin. The program followed that up with a 3-2 overtime win over UConn to make the Frozen Four. But while the results in the tournament have been impressive, this team is clearly the least impressive one left. They rank seventh (last of the Frozen Four) in goals per game–and 39th (also last) in goals allowed per game.
Unlike Boston University, Penn State doesn’t have a new goalie whose arrival points to better defensive production. Their netminder, Arsenii Sergeev, has played in 32 games, ranks 38th in goals allowed (2.56), and clocks in at 27th in save percentage (91.8%). But like Boston University, Penn State finds itself on only a two-game winning streak after getting bounced by Ohio State in the Big Ten tournament.

Boston University boasts an exceptional netminder and two top-10 players by goals per game in Quinn Hutson (0.64) and Cole Eiserman (0.62). Not only does no other team this season have two such scorers, but no other team in the tournament does, either. Hutson even scored the golden goal to get the Terriers past Cornell.
It’s hard to see how Penn State keeps up here. With a clear disadvantage in the net and on the power play, another raucous upset like the one they put together against Maine is probably not in the cards. Maine even trailed Boston University in goals per game while starting a goalie with a worse save percentage than BU’s Mikhail Yegorov.
Another crucial advantage in Boston University’s corner is head coach Jay Pandolfo, who boasts a .701 winning percentage as a head coach and a 4-2 record in the tournament, including two Frozen Four appearances. Penn State’s Guy Gadowsky is a .504 coach with a 2-5 record in the tournament and zero Frozen Four bids.
Of course, the betting markets favor BU, but that doesn’t mean we can’t find betting value on the Terriers. You can find them trading at +154 to cover the puck line, which I think their experience and netminding advantages will help them do. With such a friendly line, it’s hard to leave this one off the card.
