NHL Goalies to avoid in your Fantasy Hockey Playoffs
For managers who have the privilege of competing in Fantasy Hockey playoffs, it’s important to pick up players off the waiver wire who can target specific categories and roster goalies who are likely to receive multiple starts a week. However, one of the most important strategies to remember in the playoffs is the strength of schedules. Researching which teams play four games a week and who they’re playing against can be game-changing, with managers having the ability to increase their stats significantly just by being aware of the upcoming schedule. Below are three teams that not only have multiple games coming up, but also play weaker teams who managers can take advantage of.
Following a string of tough losses to the likes of the Colorado Avalanche, the Florida Panthers, and the Ottawa Senators, the Toronto Maple Leafs have finally found their game again, going 3-0 over the past week. Fortunately for coach Craig Berube, his team will have the opportunity to build on their win streak, with the Leafs scheduled to play four games next week. However, fantasy managers should take note that Toronto plays three of the weakest teams in the NHL starting next Tuesday, with matchups against the Philadelphia Flyers, the Anaheim Ducks and the San Jose Sharks. Outside of the Los Angeles Kings, who the Leafs play Saturday, Toronto should perform well against their competition. In addition, their clash with the Ducks will take place on Sunday, allowing managers to roster Leafs players for the final day of the fantasy week. Wingers such as Bobby McMann and Matthew Knies are smart targets for next week, as both have proven to provide the Leafs will depth scoring and solid numbers in the hits category. For managers looking to pick up players for an entire week against easier opponents, the Leafs are a credible option moving forward.
Similarly to the Leafs, the Ottawa Senators also play four games next week. However, they have been fighting to hold on to their position in the wild-card race, and there’s no doubt the Sens will be playing hard down the stretch in order to keep that spot. In addition, they will be competing against the likes of the Buffalo Sabres and the Pittsburgh Penguins, both of whom they should defeat. They also play on both Saturday and Sunday, allowing managers to pickup Sens players for back-to-back games. Most importantly, the Sens have the third easiest schedule remaining for the rest of the 2024-2025 season, meaning any players acquired from their team not only could be used for this week, but for the rest of the playoffs. Managers can prioritize the Senators’ newest addition to the team, Dylan Cozens, who currently has six points in seven games since being traded from the Sabres. He’s also strong on the face-off dot, for those who need to improve their win percentage on the draw.
The Tampa Bay Lightning may only have three games this upcoming week, but their fantasy value should definitely not be overlooked. The Lightning are 6-3-1 in their last 10 and have the ninth-easiest schedule remaining for the season. However, it’s their opponents over the next two weeks that make the Bolts a solid fantasy option. The Lightning should find success playing lackluster teams such as the Pens and the New York Islanders next week, with the Utah Hockey Club being the only competitive challenger. In addition, the following week they will enter battle with the Islanders again, and also head to Buffalo to play the Sabres. Anthony Cirelli continues to be an underrated fantasy pickup, having scored over 20 goals and being +25 this year, as well as remaining consistent on the face-off dot. For managers looking to lock up potential game-changers for two weeks, the Lightning are definitely worth considering during a playoff run.
Having more games than your opponent in Fantasy Hockey is crucial when trying to win playoff weeks. It’s beneficial if players are competing on teams that have four games in one week, but managers can gain more points and win extra categories by focusing on which teams have easier schedules. The Leafs, Senators, and Lighting are all solid options to choose from not just because of their talent and schedule, but also due to competing in a stacked Atlantic division that has featured some of the strongest teams in the NHL this year.
