BOSTON – All local college hockey games matter in the national picture at this point in the season.
That was the attitude the No. 12 ranked Boston College women’s hockey team brought into Tuesday night’s 46th Beanpot consolation match against Harvard at the TD Garden.
“That is what we talked about before the game,” BC coach Katie Crowley said. “Every game is big for us right now, and that was the message coming into this one, and I like the way we responded.”
BC goalie Grace Campbell set aside 27 shots to record her 15th win of the season in a 4-1 victory over the Crimson. BC improved to 16-7-1 in a rematch of last year’s third-place game that finished tied 2-2 and won by Harvard in a shootout.
The struggling Crimson fell to 2-16-2 but leads the Beanpot series against BC, 18-12-1.
“Obviously happy with our start tonight and found a way to keep that going through the full 60 minutes,” Crowley said. “This is our first win at the Garden, so it was a fun one for us and good to win that game.”
BC opened the scoring on Julia Pellerin’s 13th of the season at 4:57 of the first. Sophomore defenseman Molly Jordan stopped a Harvard clearing attempt at the blue and fed Pellerin as she arched her way into the high slot. Pellerin ripped a wrister that rolled off Harvard goalie Ainsley Tuffy’s left shoulder and found the back of the net.
The Eagles scored 2-0 with a nifty piece of backline scoring by Jordan at 7:55. Junior right wing Kate Ham maintained possession on a tricky bounce off the left half wall and spied Jordan alone between the circles. Jordan zipped a one-timer that beat Tuffy high to the glove side for her seventh of the season.
“I give credit to our forwards, they move the puck really well and they always have their heads up,” Jordan said. “I saw Katie Pyne and Katie Ham working the wall and jumped on it.”
The Eagles went up 3-0 at 12:31 when sophomore left wing Katie Pyne finished a 2-on-1 break with a backhand inside the right post for their third of the season. Ham led the breakout and picked up her second assist of the match and third of the season.
Crimson coach Laura Bellemy lifted Tuffy after 20 minutes and put junior Emily Davidson (18 saves) in net to start the second. Harvard attempted to take the game to Campbell at the start of the second, but the Eagles were effective at keeping the Crimson contained in the neutral zone.
“I just felt like we needed to make a change, and we certainly didn’t help with some of those plays,” Bellamy said. “You never want to give up three in the first period, and she’s been fantastic to us.
“They did a pretty good job inside their offensive blue line to win battles all night. I think Ainsley’s eyes were taken away on a couple of those, and she fought those. But we just needed a change.”
BC scored 4-0 with a shorthanded goal by freshman center Alanna Devlin of Marshfield at 6:39 of the third. Sophomore right wing Sammy Tabor of Tewksbury won a puck battle along the end boards and dished the puck to Devlin, who was left unattended in the slot. Devlin ripped a wrist shot by Davidson for her fourth of the season.
Campbell lost her bid for a fifth shutout of the season when Harvard defenseman Maria Pape scored on the power play at 14:22.
