TNT’s first Wednesday Night Hockey broadcast of the season is a good one, as the Colorado Avalanche visit the Vegas Golden Knights on October 9th at 10:00 PM ET. This Western Conference clash will be broadcast live from the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada.
Oddsmakers have set this game as a true pick’em, with both teams priced at -110 for this matchup. The puck will drop at 10:00 pm EST on TNT.
Here is our Avalanche vs Golden Knights prediction, along with NHL odds to consider.
The Avalanche and Golden Knights have established themselves as two of the NHL’s elite teams in recent years. Colorado boasts the third-best regular-season points percentage (.647) over the past seven seasons, while Vegas ranks sixth (.627). Both teams have captured a Stanley Cup during this span.
The Avs finished with 107 points last season, while the Golden Knights weren’t far behind with 98. The head-to-head matchups were evenly split, with Vegas prevailing 4-3 in the final meeting of 2023-24. Of note is that the home team has won the last four meetings between these clubs.

The Avs will rely on the dynamic duo of Nathan MacKinnon, the 2024 Hart winner, and Mikko Rantanen to lead their offensive charge. However, they’ll be without key forwards Artturi Lehkonen (shoulder), Valeri Nichushkin (suspension), and captain Gabriel Landeskog (knee).
The Golden Knights lost some key players like Jonathan Marchessault and Chandler Stephenson in the offseason. However, they can never be counted out at home, where they went 27-12-2 last season. VGK will likely start goalie Adin Hill, who posted a 10-7-1 record, 2.54 GAA, and .913 save percentage at T-Mobile last year.
Adin Hill is the first goalie off the ice. He'll get the start as VGK look for their 6th straight Opening Night win.

While both teams boast offensive firepower, I expect this game to be more of a defensive battle. The Golden Knights have a strong d-core led by Noah Hanifin and Alex Pietrangelo, while the Avalanche are also loaded on defense with Cale Makar and Devon Toews.
Given Vegas’ home-ice advantage, Hill’s track record at home, and the Avs’ missing forwards, I like the Knights in this one. I predict a 3-2 victory for Vegas in a tight game that stays under the total of 6.5 goals.

NHL Betting Sites & Apps For 2024
The Colorado Avalanche and Vegas Golden Knights are both priced at -110 in the Wednesday NHL odds, which implies a 52.4% probability of winning for each team.
As of current publishing, the -110 odds are consistent across most sportsbooks, showing oddsmakers agree that the game is a pick’em. VGK could become a slight favorite by puck drop due to their home-ice advantage, strong goaltending, and Colorado’s absent forwards.
In terms of over/under, the total number of projected goals is 6.5, with -118 odds favoring the under. Despite the offensive talent on both sides, the defensive capabilities of these teams and the absence of key Avalanche forwards suggest a lower-scoring game is more likely.

Injuries could play a significant role in this game’s outcome. The Avalanche will be without forwards Artturi Lehkonen (shoulder), Valeri Nichushkin (suspension), and Gabriel Landeskog (knee), leaving voids in their top-six and impacting their overall depth.
For the Golden Knights, William Karlsson is out with an undisclosed injury, potentially affecting their depth down the middle. These overall absences could shift the balance in Vegas’ favor as they look to win a 6th straight season opener.
