The folks hankering to count down the days to the next hockey season have an official start date for NHL hockey.
Preseason hockey, to be more specific.
The Colorado Avalanche will play six preseason games, including two on Sept. 21 against the Utah Mammoth. Both of those games will take place in Denver, with one played at Ball Arena and another at a location that will be announced at a later date.
While the Avalanche have not announced a start date for training camp, it typically begins 3-4 days before the first preseason game.
The regular season schedule is typically announced around July 1.
Here is the full preseason schedule for the Avalanche: 
Sept. 21: at Utah Mammoth (in Denver), TBD on time
Sept. 21: vs. Utah Mammoth (Ball Arena), TBD on time

Sept. 27: vs. Dallas Stars (Ball Arena), 5 p.m.
Sept. 30: vs. Vegas Golden Knights (Ball Arena), 6 p.m.
Oct. 1: at Vegas Golden Knights (T-Mobile Arena), 7 p.m.
Oct. 4: at Dallas Stars (American Airlines Center), 4 p.m.
Avs sign two forwards
In addition to announcing their preseason schedule, the Avalanche confirmed they have re-signed two depth forwards, Jason Polin and Matt Stienburg.
The 24-year old Stienburg dressed in eight games for the Avalanche this past season before missing most of the year with an upper-body injury. He was suspended for two games for a high hit on Tampa Bay defenseman Erik Cernak on Oct. 30 but served the suspension during the playoffs, according to Puckpedia.
The 26-year-old Polin played in two games for the Avalanche this season and also missed a large portion of time in the AHL due to injury. He played seven games in the NHL the previous season, scoring one goal.
