The Falcons are focused on putting the gut punch behind them.
Air Force (11-14-1) entered last weekend’s series at rival Army on somewhat of a roll, beating Atlantic Hockey America’s top three teams on the second night of the series after an opening night loss. That came to an end last weekend as the Black Knights scored two third-period goals and an overtime game winner on the second night to complete a sweep of Air Force.
“That was a massive gut punch and there are no moral victories for Army and Air Force. You either find a way to get it done or you don’t and (Army coach) Brian Riley would tell you the same thing,” Air Force coach Frank Serratore said. “We came in, had a meeting (Tuesday), put some closure to it and now we’re moving forward. But we’ve got to be better.”
Moving forward, the Falcons have the benefit of home ice for the remainder of January, hosting Atlantic Hockey America opponents Holy Cross this weekend and Rochester Institute of Technology the next.
That said, nothing is guaranteed in college hockey, especially when it comes to Air Force and Holy Cross.
The Falcons haven’t beaten the Crusaders (11-11-2) in just north of five years. Air Force’s last win over Holy Cross was Dec. 6, 2019, a 7-2 home victory.
This time, the Falcons and Crusaders face off at Cadet Ice Arena at 7 p.m. on Friday and 5 p.m. on Saturday.
Much like the Falcons’ opponents in previous weeks, Air Force is facing Holy Cross just as the Crusaders are hitting their stride. Holy Cross is unbeaten in the last four games and is coming off a sweep of league foe Bentley this past weekend.
Serratore noted his team is taking the challenge seriously in practice.
“(Tuesday’s) practice might have been our best of the season. They got after it big time. It was hard, it was physical but it was clean,” Serratore said. I think we were all out there yesterday in practice trying to cleanse our soul a little bit and put some final closure with an exclamation mark on the Army weekend.”
