As the AHL season flipped the page on the first half of the season, the AHL All-Star Challenge 2025 was one of the most exciting times of the season, short of watching the Calder Cup playoffs.
Players from across the World representing the AHL’s 32 teams and four divisions traveled from across the United States and Canada to the home of the Coachella Valley Firebirds, affiliate of the NHL’s Seattle Kraken, in Palm Desert, CA.
Sunday night’s AHL Skills Competition 2025 did not disappoint, with top NHL prospects like Simon Nemec, Matthew Savoie, Dalibor Dvorsky, and Yaroslav Askarov showing off their elite skills across seven different events at Acrisure Arena. Dylan Garand and Sebastian Cossa were in net to start.
Central controlled the puck for the first minutes of the period until Ethan Bear collected the puck and passed it up to Brian Pinho. Eventually the puck made it back to Ethan Bear to score his first goal of the night.
With 3:40 remaining, Salomonsson scored off of the pass from Justin Hryckowian to tie it up.
The Central division did a goalie change on the fly, putting DiPietro in the net with two and a half to go.
Guttman tested DiPietro immediately, which he swatted away successfully to start his shift.
Central controlled the puck for the final moments of the game but were unable to convert, taking the game to a shootout.

Second Period
Askarov checked into the net for the Pacific, Salomonsson was able to whip it up and over the blocker for the Central division to kick off the second period.
As the clock ticked out for the Pacific’s chances to make the last game of the night, Askarov left the net and Central was able to extend their lead to three.
Cossa took an attempt at the goalie goal during the empty net but it was stopped by the Pacific.
Central Division moved onto the championship game to face off against the Atlantic all-stars.
First Period
In the second to last game of the night, Matt Murray and Devin Cooley in net.
It didn’t take long for Rory Kerins to put the puck in the back of the net, scoring just 50 seconds into the game.
Cameron Hebig followed it up shortly after, just 15 seconds in fact, to keep the Pacific pressure on.
Cooley made an attempt on a diving poke check but Austin Watson drew him out and backhanded the puck past him. Watson followed it up with a friendly tap as Cooley was still recovering with a nice, short nap on the ice.
Just a few seconds later, Watson immediately drove the net and netted a second to keep the scoring train chugging along.
Gaunce tallied yet another and the rally was complete for the Central division to end the first period.

Second Period
Mailloux started the period with a few good looks but Bemstrom was able to help defensively.
Devon Levi entered the net for the North and made three great saves in a row in the first two minutes of the period.
As the period enters its final minute, Owen Pickering finally got it past Levi to take the lead for the Atlantic. It was Pickering’s third attempt at beating him over the five minutes.
Fix-Wolansky hit the post with just ten seconds, beating DiPietro remaining as the North pulled their goalie and went up a skater.
Atlantic won and is headed to the final game of the evening against the winner of Pacific vs Central.
First Period
It’s an Eastern Conference showdown as the two teams of the East battle it out for the chance at the championship game to face off the winner of the West.
Garand is in the net again for Atlantic while Hildeby is in net for the North.
After three minutes, neither team has scored.
Logan Shaw scored with 1:43 to go, firing a cannon at the crossbar over the shoulder of Garand.
Dalibor Dvorsky collected a pass in his glove and slowly floated into the offensive zone to make a quick movement and edge it past Hildeby with less than 30 seconds to go.

Second Period
Cooley opened the period with a great save when Alex Limoges was all alone and passed it to himself off the boards.
Olle Lycksell opens the scoring in the second period with a slick sweep past the goaltender. He followed it up within 30 seconds on a pass to Owen Pickering who eyed just inside the post on the low blocker side and nailed the selection.
Garand continues to stack on a few big saves in a row although he was unable to stop Savoie and Fagemo, finding the back of the net with a minute and 45 seconds remaining.
Savoie scored his own goal 23 seconds later with some impressive faking out and beat Garand to tuck it in to the five hole.
With regulation time running out and the score being tied, the game entered a three-round shootout.

First Period
Dylan Garand started for the Atlantic Division. Yaroslav Askarov started for the Pacific.
The first 30 seconds were packed with a bunch of chances for the Atlantic but were unable to beat Askarov.
Dalibor Dvorsky made it look easy, scoring the first goal of the fourth game about 90 seconds into the game, picking the corner and doing it all alone.
AHL’s leading scorer Andrew Poturalski finally earned his first goal of the night, drawing the crowd’s loudest ovation of the night.

Second Period
Matt Murray returned to the net for the Central as the second period started. Hildeby returned.
In his third goal of the night, Owen Beck scored for the two-goal lead off of a forehand-to-backhand into the five hole converted the try this time.
Steeves tallied the fourth for the North.
As the fireworks continue, Curtis McKenzie received a sneaky behind the back pass from Korchinski to get the puck past Hildeby.
Central pulled their goalie for an extra attacker with 30 seconds remaining but were unable to net a final goal to bring it within one.
First Period
Dennis Hildeby started for the North while Sebastian Cossa returned to the net for the Central Division.
Trey Fix-Wolansky had the first good look on the net but Cossa was able to stop it.
Guttman ran away with no one within 50 yards of him and flipped the puck off the backhand high blocker-side.
Davies sniped the top left corner and smacked the bar with the puck, which generously bounced into the net from the Steeves pass with less than a minute to go.
Brett Murray scored an insane goal at the buzzer between the legs with the defender on his case in front of the net.

Second Period
Matt Murray returned to the net while Sebastian Cossa checked in for the Central Division.
Brendan Gaunce scored the first goal of the second game, opening up the second period after a beautiful sauce from Joakim Kemell.
Kevin Korchinski was able to reach out and get another one past DiPietro, barely getting it past his outstretched boot.
In a 2-on-none Austin Watson plus Ryan Suzuki breakaway, Cossa was able to put a stop to their pressure despite what felt like 10 passes back and forth as they approached.
Gaunce scored another goal after another beautiful pass by Joakim Kemell, this time behind the back to beat the defender.
First Period
Michael DiPietro will start in goal for the Atlantic. Matt Murray in net for Central.
DiPietro made a save on a good look from Grand Rapids Griffins’ Austin Watson broke out about 90 seconds in.
Dalibor Dvorsky took the puck right in front of the net from Central’s defense but couldn’t close the deal and beat Murray.
As the time whittled down, DiPietro had a few opportunities for flashy saves.

Second Period
Devon Levi stayed in the goal for the North while Yaroslav Askarov swapped in to the net for the Pacific.
Askarov picked things up right where he left off last night, putting on a show with a diving poke check save.
Cameron Hebig connected with Rory Kerins able to trickle the puck past Levi.
Owen Beck scored again, breaking out and flipping the puck off the upright into the top of the net to get past Askarov.
The North division pulled the goalie to add a skater with less than a minute remaining. Askarov made a save at the buzzer to earn the win for the Pacific.
First Period
Devin Cooley started in the net for the Pacific while Devon Levi started for the North.
Owen Beck scored the first goal of the AHL All Star Challenge in a two-on-one to beat Devin Cooley with Syracuse Crunch’s Derrick Pouliot at the halfway point in the first of the two five-minute periods.
Coachella Valley Firebird Jani Nyman sniped the mid-level glove side to score the first goal for the Pacific division in front of the hometown crowd.
As the clock ticked down to just 30 seconds remaining, Samuel Fagemo delayed and tucked it around the extended pad of Levi to put in the second for the Pacific.

Puck drop is next! Here’s how tonight’s games will go.
Tonight’s games will be made up of four all-star teams: Atlantic, North, Central, Pacific.
There are twelve players per team, competing in a six-game round robin tournament played 3-on-3.
Each game will consist of two five-minute periods. If they are tied after regulation, there will be a three-round shootout. If they are still tied after the shootout, the game is a tie.
Winning teams get two points, ties earn one point.
The top two teams will advance to the championship.
