The 2025 World Juniors are officially underway.
The annual IIHF tournament is a chance for the best U20 prospects from around the globe to compete on the biggest stage of their young playing careers while also representing their country. The goal is simple — bring a gold medal back to their nation.
Ten teams are in Ottawa competing to be crowned World Junior champions. The United States has hopes of defending its gold medal from the 2024 competition, bringing back key members of the championship group such as Ryan Leonard, Gabe Perreault and Zeev Buium.
Canada is aiming to get back on the podium after missing out on a medal in 2024. The Canadians recently went back-to-back in 2022 and 2023. Finland has not won gold at the tournament since 2016, while Sweden has been titleless at the World Juniors stage since 2012.

* = advances to knockout stage
** = plays in relegation game
Teams will play four preliminary games in a round-robin format within their group, followed by a three-round playoff.
In the group stage, teams earn three points for a regulation win, two points for an overtime win, one point for an overtime loss and no points for a regulation loss.
The top four teams from each group advance to the quarterfinals, where the matchups are determined by seeding. They will cross over between groups for these games: 1A vs. 4B, 1B vs. 4A, 2A vs. 3B and 2B vs. 3A. The teams that advance to the semifinals will be reseeded.
The winners of the semifinals will face off in the gold medal game. The losers will play for bronze.
