Local product Tyson Kozak of the Buffalo Sabres scored his first NHL goal in just his second game, two days after he appeared to score in his debut against the Winnipeg Jets, only to have it taken away.
Kozak scored the game’s first goal as the Sabres played host to the Utah Hockey Club on Saturday, going to the net and tipping a feed from Beck Malenstyn at 10:14 of the first period.
In the stands cheering him on was his mom, Michelle.
“Oh my Jesus,” she texted to the Winnipeg Sun after the game. “I knew this one counted, no recall. So happy I was there to see it.”
Two nights earlier, Michelle, along with Kozak’s father and sister, were in Buffalo as Kozak scored against the Jets, only to have Winnipeg challenge it because there may have been goalie interference on the play.
Sure enough, the goal was disallowed.
Kozak’s father, Trevor, returned to Souris the next day, but mom knew better.
“No way,” she said. “I’m staying for at least two games. I have to work Monday, too, but I’ll be home Sunday night.”
Michelle enjoyed her goal celebration in relative anonymity, compared to Thursday, when TV cameras were on both parents, capturing the rush of emotions and the sudden letdown.
“I wasn’t on the big screen for this one,” she said. “After his first disallowed goal all Tyson could to me was, ‘You’re tik tok famous.’ I had no clue what he was talking about. Who knew the camera was on me?”
Kozak was a seventh-round draft three years ago, spending the last two seasons in the AHL.
He will celebrate his 22nd birthday later this month.
The Sabres lost Saturday’s game, 5-2.
