BETHPAGE, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — A Long Island high school senior and ice hockey player died on Saturday after experiencing a medical emergency during a game, authorities said.
Connor Kasin, 17, was playing in a charity hockey game at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage at about 9 p.m. when he lost consciousness on the ice during an intermission, according to Nassau County Police.
Police said that “civilians” at the scene began giving Kasin CPR, which was continued upon ambulance and police arrival, but he was unable to be saved. He was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
“It is with profound sorrow that I inform you of the tragic loss of one of our beloved Massapequa High School students, Connor Kasin,” Massapequa Public Schools Superintendent William Brennan said in a letter addressing the community.
Brennan described Kasin’s death as a “sudden medical event,” and said that counseling services would be available on the high school campus from 1 p.m.to 3 p.m. to help students, staff and families with the grieving process.
“Connor was a cherished member of our school community, known for his kindness, positivity, enthusiasm, and big smile,” Brennan continued. “He had a way of bringing light and joy to those around him, and his absence will be felt deeply by all of us.”
Kasin was expected to play for Massapequa High School against Half Hollow Hills on Sunday evening, a game scheduled as part of the New York Islanders High School Hockey League, but the game was canceled in light of the death.
“It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of the sudden passing of one of our NYIHSHL players last evening,” a message on the website reads. “Due to this tragedy, all NYIHSHL games scheduled for today are canceled. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the player’s family, teammates and classmates throughout this most difficult time.”
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino released a statement following Kasin’s death, stating that “His loss is heartbreaking, and we offer our deepest condolences and prayers to Connor’s family and friends.”
In honor of Kasin, Saladino ordered all American flags at Town facilities to half-staff.
Authorities are working to determine what led to Kasin’s death.
