DETROIT — Following another win over the New York Islanders, the Detroit Red Wings return home on Wednesday night to begin a three-game homestand, as they play host to the Calgary Flames.
The Red Wings finished up their season series with the Isles this past Monday night with three unanswered goals in the third period on Long Island, helping the team complete the sweep of the Islanders with a 4-2 win. Simon Edvinsson and Moritz Seider each had a goal and an assist, Lucas Raymond and captain Dylan Larkin also found the back of the net, while Alex Lyon pitched another great performance between the pipes.
Despite their success against lower teams from the Metropolitan Division, Detroit has to show it has the ability to hang with some of the better teams in the league. Heading into Wednesday, the Wings are sixth in the Atlantic, eight points out of first place.
The Flames are certainly going to be a worthy test. The team was one of the hottest teams in the NHL during the opening weeks of the year (pun intended), but since cooled off. Yet, they are still one of the top teams in the Pacific Division. Following a tough loss on Monday against the Ottawa Senators, the first of a four-game road trip out east, the Flames are second in the Pacific, three points behind the first-place Vegas Golden Knights.
This will be the first of two meetings this year between the Red Wings and Flames. Detroit has won four straight against Calgary dating back to the 2022-23 campaign.
