Welcome back to The Oil Rig‘s weekly fantasy update! We continue aiming to bring you the information you need to show up your friends (or enemies) and get bragging rights by winning your league.
Each week we provide a schedule breakdown showing which teams to stream players from, who is hot and who is cold, some sleeper picks with low owned percentages to keep an eye on, and some Edmonton Oilers fantasy hockey updates.
Keep checking back on Mondays for a new update each week.
Week 5 presents a very rigid schedule. 74% of the games played come on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Your lineups are likely to overflow on these nights so its best to take stock of which players won’t crack you lineup and consider them as drop candidates.
Keep these resources at the top of your season-long tool list. Use them to guide your transactions. These become more valuable as the season goes on and teams establish themselves in overall power rankings.

Left Wing Lock – Strength of Schedule
Six teams play two times this week:
Only four teams play four times this week:
Teams who play on more than one off-night are likely to increase your games player per week when there is a high concentration of games scheduled on primary nights. Here are some examples of teams on multiple off-nights during Week 5:
Thirteen teams play on back-to-back nights this week. Use teams to plan for backup goaltender appearances in Week 5 action.
Chicago – Wed, Thu
Columbus – Sat, Sun
Detroit – Fri, Sat
Los Angeles – Mon, Tue
Minnesota – Thu, Fri
Nashville – Wed, Thu
New Jersey – Sat, Sun
Pittsburgh – Thu/Fri
Toronto – Fri, Sat
Washington – Fri,Sat
Calgary – MTL/BOS/BUF
Carolina – PHI/PIT/COL
Florida – NSH/PHI
New Jersey – EDM/MTL/NYI/SJS
Colorado – SEA/WPG/CAR
Philadelphia – CAR/TB/FLA
Players from the NHL’s hottest teams are obvious targets. They are wise choices in both trade offers and to add from waivers. Consider adding a backup goalie from these rosters when back-to-back games are on the upcoming schedule.
Here are the NHL’s hottest teams during their last 10GP:
Winnipeg Jets 9–1–0
Florida Panthers 8–1–1
Carolina Hurricanes 8–2–0
Washington Capitals 8–2–0
Minnesota Wild 7–1–2
After teams hit the double digit mark in games played, negative trends tend to continue. Aside from major injury news, a poor record in the last 10GP is indicting. Start by pivoting away from goalies on these teams in trade or via waivers. These will be players who prevent you from winning a league championship.
Here are the NHL’s coldest teams during their last 10GP:
San Jose Sharks 3–7–0
Philadelphia Flyers 3–6–1
Montreal Canadiens 3–6–1
Chicago Blackhawks 4–6–0
St Louis Blues 4–6–0
Connor McMichael (C, LW) / Aliaksei Protas (C,LW) – Washington Capitals
The Washington Capitals are making waves as one of the leagues hottest teams and it admittedly comes as a surprise to most fans who had them pegged to finish in the middle of the pack. They are getting considerable production from McMichael and Protas who are both in top six positions. McMichael has scored six goals in his last six games including one game where he tallied 10 SOG against the New York Rangers. He’s currently skating on Washington’s second line and first power play unit. Protas has three goals and four assists in his last four games while skating on the teams first line opposite Alex Ovechkin. Look for his offensive production to continue and some looks to come his way on the power play.
Ryan Donato (C,LW) – Chicago Blackhawks
If you hadn’t been paying much attention the Chicago Blackhawks it would have been easy to miss the recent production from Donato who has scored five goals during his last five games while adding two assists and a +4 rating. Since having jumped into the the first line and power play role next to Connor Bedard his production has spiked, making him worth of a fantasy add. Consider him for Chicago’s back-to-back games on November 6 and 7.
Gabriel Vilardi (C,RW) – Winnipeg Jets
The rising tide has lifted many of the Winnipeg Jets players boats during their hot start to the 2024–25 season. Vilardi has been one of the most common names we’ve heard during Week 4 action. Over the Jets last four games, Vilardi contributed three goals and three assists, while going +4 with 11 SOG. The first line and power play role is going well for both Vilardi and Winnipeg, expect that success to continue in Week 5.
Calvin Pickard (G) – Edmonton Oilers
Pickard has been reserved from participating in much of the early season struggles that the Oilers have endured. Pickard has won his last three starts in a row and earned a start in two of the last four Edmonton Oilers games. During the last two weeks, he is 2–1 a 1.50 GAA and .943 SV%. With the Oilers playing back-to-back games November 3 and 4, you can expect a start for Pickard to begin Week 5 action.
Nazem Kadri (C) – Calgary Flames
After a strong start to the season, Kadri has failed produce a point in his last four games going -5 over the stretch. The offensive slowdown comes amidst a stretch where the Flames have lost five of their last six games. The Flames are tweaking lines and currently have Kadri listed centering Connor Zary and Martin Pospisil, neither of which are offensive producers.
Alex Laferriere (RW) – Los Angeles Kings – 44% Owned
Laferriere is better considered as a must add in this weeks streaming candidate section. The Kings play four games this week, including back to back games on Monday and Tuesday. Laferriere skates on the Kings third line and first power play unit. The young wingers has scored four goals in his last three games giving him eight on the season. You can expect regular production in banger leagues where he averages 2.0 HIT/GP.
Marco Rossi (C,RW) – Minnesota Wild – 14% Owned
Rossi is centering the Wild’s top line and appears on the team’s second power play unit. He has the good fortune of playing between Kirill Kaprizov and Mats Zuccarello who are both enjoying strong offensive seasons. With four games played on the schedule for the Wild, expect Rossi to contribute points and a positive +/- rating as the Wild are the fifth best team across their last 10 games.
Gustav Nyquist (LW) – Nashville Predators – 26% Owned
Another player with four games on the schedule for Week 5, Nyquist comes in having 5G and adding 7BS in his last 6GP. With his first line opportunities, he projects to have a productive week for a Predators team who are shaking off some of the early season rust with wins in four of their last six played.
Luke Schenn (D) – Nashville Predators – 5% Owned
Treat it as a bonus if Schenn registers a point over his four scheduled games this week. You’re adding him for his contributions in HIT and BS. His output by the end of the week could reach 15 hits and 10 blocked shots.
Calvin Pickard (G) – Edmonton Oilers – 15% Owned
Pickard will get the start for Edmonton on the second half of back to back games to start the week off against New Jersey. His recent individual performances have been strong and the Oilers are now winner in four of their last five games. The absence of Connor McDavid casts a large shadow but who better to step up in a time of need and steal a game for the Oilers at home.
