SAN JOSE, Calif. (KMOT) – UPDATE (2/20/2024 at 7 a.m.): More than a thousand miles from the Magic City, a Minot native made history on the ice in California!
With less than a minute left in the first period of Monday’s game, Mason Morelli scored a goal in his first NHL game. Morelli was just recalled from the Las Vegas Golden Knights’ AHL affiliate team and is a left-winger.
Morelli also had an assist on a goal in the second period as the Golden Knights beat the San Jose Sharks 4-0.
Morelli is the first player from Minot to play in the National Hockey League.

ORIGINAL STORY (2/19/2024 at 2:50 p.m.): Mason Morelli, a Minot native and member of the Morelli hockey family, will suit up for an NHL team on Monday.
The Las Vegas Knights announced over the weekend they had recalled the 28-year-old Morelli from their AHL affiliate, the Henderson Silver Knights.
So far this season, Morelli has played in 44 games for the Silver Knights and recorded 10 goals.
Morelli graduated from Minot High and played for the Minotauros before captaining the University of Nebraska-Omaha in college.
He played a key role in the Hershey Bears’ Calder Cup championship run last season.
Last July, Morelli signed a two-way contract with the Golden Knights.
The Golden Knights face the San Jose Sharks on Monday afternoon at the SAP Center in San Jose.
The puck drops at 1 p.m. PT, which is 3 p.m. CT.
