Host Robert Morris had a message for Air Force hockey.
The No. 3 seed Colonials dominated the No. 6 seed Falcons from start to finish in a 4-1 victory on Saturday, forcing a decisive Game 3 in the Atlantic Hockey America quarterfinals.
It was a game of desperation for Robert Morris after the Falcons took the first game of the series with a double-overtime win on Friday.
“They showed us tonight how bad they didn’t want their season to end,” Falcons coach Frank Serratore said in a postgame radio interview.
“They came out with a desperation that we knew we were going to see. We were spectating. We didn’t match their intensity. They imposed their will on us.”
The Colonials built a two-goal lead in a matter of minutes. Forward Julian Beaumont scored the game’s first goal at 2:48, and Dario Beljo doubled Robert Morris’ advantage less than a minute later at 3:36.
The Colonials added two more in the middle frame, courtesy of forward Patrick Johnson at the 9:44 mark and defenseman Luke van Why at 17:50.
Falcons senior defenseman and captain Chris Hedden staved off the shutout for Air Force, scoring at the 1:46 mark of the third period on the setup from freshman Hayden Nichol.
Air Force junior goalie Dominik Wasik was pulled after the second period. He finished with 16 saves, and fellow junior Carter Clafton had 11 in the third period. Air Force outshot Robert Morris 34-31 in the contest.
The Falcons and Colonials will battle on Sunday to decide which team goes to the AHA semifinals. Puck drop is at 3:05 p.m.
“It’s 60 minutes or whatever it takes for somebody to move on to the semis and for somebody to get out their golf clubs,” Serratore said.
