Team USA game against Denmark didn’t deliver the clean, early statement the Americans were looking for after opening the 2026 Winter Games in Milan with a 5-1 win over Latvia, but it did end with another victory.
After falling behind 2-1 in the first period, the U.S. surged back with three goals in the second and added two more in the third to secure a 6-3 win.
Denmark, which entered the game coming off a 3-1 loss to Germany, pushed the Americans with an early lead and a long-range goal that flipped the game’s momentum in the first period.
Jeremy Swayman started in net for Team USA, while Denmark opened with Mads Sogaard before turning to Frederik Dichow in the third.
USA scored six goals on 47 shots, with Matt Boldy, Brady Tkachuk and Jack Eichel all contributing to the score.
Recap the game as it happened below.
It wasn’t pretty, and it certainly wasn’t a quick start, but despite ending the first period down 2-1, Team USA surged back in the second period.
The Americans scored three goals in the second set to retake the lead and added two more in the third period to seal the win.
Denmark punched above their weight, and at one point were set for one of the biggest upsets in olympic hockey of all time.
Brady Tkachuk bounces the puck off the skate of the Danish goaltender, an elite play and a brilliant highlight.
Dylan Larkin had a breakaway that was stopped by the new Danish goalie, Frederik Dichow.
Mads Sogaard is replaced by Frederik Dichow in the Denmark goal.
Auston Matthews is out of the sin bin and the USA are back at full strength.
Two minutes for cross-checking on Auston Matthews.
Matthews was really just responding to a cross-check against him, but that’s what the refs caught.
Auston Matthews assists Jake Guentzel as Team USA once again creates some cushion.
Team USA has consistently pressured Denmark on the offensive end since the beginning of the third period.
PICK YOUR SPOT JAKE GUENTZEL. 😤 #WinterOlympics pic.twitter.com/bQvPjsa5kq
It’s a one-goal game and we have 20 minutes left.
USA may not get the goal differential they wanted, but at this point they just need to win.
Team USA will be happy to have scored three goals in that period, but giving up the late goal will sting.
We’ll see if Mike Sullivan makes a change in goal ahead of the third period.
Shots on goal after second period:
With two seconds left in the second period, Denmark scores on a slap shot from Phillip Bruggisser.
Denmark really punching above their weight in this game.
Team USA scores a third goal this period.
This one comes from a defenseman, Noah Hanifin, who threads it between Sogaard’s legs.
It is RAINING goals in the second period. 🙌#WinterOlympics pic.twitter.com/539DZPqXLh
The USA’s ability to win face-offs has absolutely been their superpower here at the 2026 winter games.
Eichel rips it into the net and Team USA takes the lead for the first time this game.

Brady Tkachuk releases a blistering shot directly after a face-off that goes past the Denmark goaltender.
Tkachuk was feeling it.
He was a big part of the USA’s rally against Latvia, using his physicality and scoring a goal.
Big celebration between the American teammates after the goal.

Denmark survives the USA power play.
The Americans have 17 shots, compared to Denmark’s 8.
Two minutes for slashing on Denmark’s Patrick Russell.
USA had a strong PP unit against Latvia.
Jack Eichel broke away and had a great chance to score, only to be thwarted by Denmark’s goalie Mads Sogaard.
Alright, let’s see if Team USA can get back on track in this second period, or if Denmark can hold onto what could be one of the biggest olympic ice hockey upsets of all time.
I’m not surprised, but have to wonder if it was Oettinger instead of Hellebuyck backing up today if the hook would have been quicker. Won’t want to play Hellebuyck in B2B games with Germany tomorrow. https://t.co/jPEaBowxbF
It would be easy to compare this slow start to the game that Team USA had against Latvia. But this feels wholly different, the Americans can’t seem to put anything together.
Team USA was also never losing to Latvia.
We’ll see what changes, if any, Mike Sullivan makes during the intermission.
USA trails 2-1 after the first in a game where not only the win matters, but goal differential too. Also have to recover from one of the worst goals allowed in the NHL era of the Olympics this side of Tommy Salo.
An absolutely wild goal from the Danish team, Nicholas Jensen shoots the puck from just past the redline.
Somehow it makes its way past Swayman and Denmark retakes the lead.
Lots of debate among the broadcasters as to whether the puck was unseen because it blended in with the dark boards.

Brock Nelson nearly scored his third goal of the winter games, but was denied by Sogaard.
Two minutes for holding on Dylan Larkin.
Matt Boldy takes the puck up almost single-handedly and scores with a wraparound.
We’re tied 1-1 early in the first period.

The Danish team stuns the USA early, as Nick Olesen scores to give Denmark the lead early.
