Team Canada makes their much-anticipated 2026 Winter Olympics debut on Thursday with a matchup against Czechia.
The last time NHL players played in the Winter Olympics back in 2014 in Sochi, Team Canada dominated the tournament from start to finish and earned yet another Gold medal.
Looking to put forth a similar performance in Italy, the Canadians find themselves as heavy favorites over Czechia in their opening game.
To say the Team Canada roster is loaded with talent would be an understatement. The team is led by Connor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon, who are currently the two highest point-scorers in the NHL with 96 and 93 points respectively.
The talent of McDavid and MacKinnon alone is enough to carry the load, but other forwards such as Macklin Celebrini, Mitch Marner, Sam Reinhart, Brad Marchand and Brandon Hagel give the Canadian offensive attack nearly endless possibilities for this tournament.
The Canadian blue line is in great shape as well, as Cale Makar and Josh Morrissey are two of the best in the business, while Sidney Crosby’s elite leadership makes Team Canada a force to be reckoned with.
The biggest question mark surrounding Team Canada comes between the pipes. Jordan Binnington is projected to take on the starting role, but he is currently going through the roughest season of his career in St. Louis.
The good news for Binnington is that he will have a great team in front of him, while Team Czechia, despite boasting the talents of David Pastrnak and Martin Necas, does not possess the same kind of quality.
That means if Canada gets an early lead, Czechia may have a tough time keeping up. Look for Jon Cooper’s squad to come out firing and make a strong statement with a big win in this one.
As previously mentioned, Team Canada has plenty of offensive firepower to go around. The scoring depth on this roster is scary, and it doesn’t matter what line is on the ice – the Canadians are capable of lighting the lamp early and often.
In one of the most intriguing storylines of the tournament, 19-year-old Macklin Celebrini is expected to take on a considerable role with Team Canada.
Celebrini is set to become the youngest player to feature for Canada in the Olympics, and he couldn’t be positioned in a better spot to thrive. He currently ranks fourth in the NHL with 81 points so far this season, and is tentatively penciled in to join McDavid on the top line.
Sometimes with young players in spots like this it can take some time to get used to the situation, but that shouldn’t be the case for Celebrini. He has proven he can hit the ground running in the NHL, and Cooper and his staff clearly have plenty of confidence in his ability to make an impact immediately.
Binnington’s woes this season are definitely worth considering in this matchup. The 32-year-old netminder owns a 3.65 goals-against average and .864 save percentage through 30 games so far this season.
While Czechia may not have a ton of offensive depth, they should still be able to find some success against Binnington.
Look for Canada to do most of the damage, but Czechia is still capable of scoring just enough to take this one over the listed total of 5.5.
