USA wins Olympic men’s hockey gold, edging Canada 2-1 in overtime in a final that felt like Canada’s game for long stretches but ended on one decisive finish.
Matt Boldy opened the scoring in the first period on the USA first shot, and Connor Hellebuyck spent the rest of regulation absorbing waves of pressure as Canada piled up chances.
Canada finally broke through late in the second when Cale Makar tied it at 1-1, and the third period turned into a survival test for the Americans as Canada kept coming.
After regulation ended even, the gold medal game moved to 3-on-3 overtime.
Canada carried possession and outshot the USA 42-28 overall, but Jack Hughes found the moment that mattered most, scoring the overtime winner to seal a 2-1 victory and deliver the USA’s first men’s hockey gold medal since 1980.
Recap the game as it happened below.
After the game, watch the FloHockey Daily Reaction Show: Milan-Cortina Presented By Fortune Tires.
The USA takes the gold against Canada with a Jack Hughes goal in overtime.
The United States men’s hockey team has won the gold medal for the first time since 1980.
Canada was dominant in every phase, in all three periods.
But somehow, USA digs deep to score in overtime.

The gold medal game continues.
Next goal wins in 3-on-3 hockey.
Overtime rules for the gold medal game are different from the semifinals, quarterfinals and group stage.
For the gold medal game, overtime is still a 3-on-3 sudden death, but there is no shootout.
There will be 20 minutes on the clock, but that doesn’t really matter. Next goal wins.
We’re headed to 3-on-3 overtime as Canada and USA are still tied after the third period.
Two minutes for high-sticking on Jack Hughes.
Sam Bennett gets four minutes for high-sticking.
Bennett’s stick went to the mouth of Jack Hughes.

Felt like the puck was bouncing around like a ping-pong ball in front of Team USA’s net.
Somehow USA walk away without Canada scoring a goal.
We’re only about seven minutes away from overtime.

Team USA’s offense has stagnated in the third period.
They’ve had only one shot so far and are happy to just get the puck out of their defensive end.
Connor Hellebuyck has been working hard. Canada has 37 shots this game.

Twenty more minutes left in regulation in this gold-medal game between USA and Canada.
Cale Makar, arguably the best hockey defenseman in the world, scored for Team Canada in the second period of the gold medal game to draw even with the USA.
Team Canada and Cale Makar tie it up with only a few minutes left in the period.
We’ve got another 20 minutes coming up, with each team trying to win this gold medal.
There was a big kerfuffle as the period ended. No fights yet, but these teams don’t like each other.
Shots after two periods:
Brock Faber took a long shot at Jordan Binnington, and the puck hits both posts before bouncing back into play.
Cale Makar scores directly after Canada wins the face-off in the USA end.
Canada have been constantly shooting this period, and the offensive prowess has separated them.
Now they finally get their game-tying goal.

Macklin Celebrini is blocked from point-blank range against Connor Hellebuyck.
USA still nursing a 1-0 lead, with about four minutes left in the second period.
An absolutely massive penalty-killing shift by the USA.
It was 5-on-3 for about a minute-and-a-half and somehow Connor Hellebuyck and the Americans survived.
Team Canada will have their best chance yet to score against Connor Hellebuyck.
Two minutes for holding on Jake Guentzel.
Two minutes for hooking on Charlie McAvoy.

Both teams have been opening up the shooting this period.
But they are very closely matched in chances.
Each team has 13 shots on goal.
Binnington broke up a Brock Nelson shot from short-range.
Both teams are playing at a frenetic pace.
Huge hits, people losing sticks, and constant change in possession.
USA and Canada open the second period, with the Americans holding a 1-0 lead.

Matt Boldy scored the first goal for Team USA today. Boldy scored six minutes into the first period of the gold medal game.

Team Canada successfully kills the penalty, but USA take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
It was a ferocious first period, and the pace was absolutely blistering.
Shots after first period:
Two minutes for hooking on Shea Theodore.
Theodore stopped Brock Nelson as he headed towards the Canadian net.
Despite the USA 1-0 lead, Canada have absolutely dominated possession and offensive opportunities.
When USA has had a chance, it’s on a breakaway or from a face-off win in the Canadian end.
Team Canada has constantly been testing USA goalie Connor Hellebuyck.
Canada already has seven shots on goal. USA only has two shots on goal, one going into the net.
Team USA strikes first, as Matt Boldy, sandwiched between two Canadian defenders — Cale Makar and Devon Toews.
This was the first shot for Team USA.
The puck was airborne at one point, but Boldy collected it and put it past Binnington.

Tom Wilson met Dylan Larkin with a massive hit behind the USA net, sending both players to the ground.
The largely Canadian crowd loved it.

Celebrini shoots a pass from Harley, which was saved by Connor Hellebuyck.
Canada certainly getting in the groove.
The Canadians already have three shots on goal. None for USA.
Seth Jarvis had Team Canada’s first chance of the day, right in front of Hellebuyck, who was able to cover the puck up.
Some extra pushing after the play stopped, I expect that’s not the first time we’ll see that.
Team USA took about five shots in their first shift, none on goal, but the forecheck was pressing early with the Tkachucks.
