For the first time in 46 years, the United States men’s hockey team has won the gold medal, defeating Canada 2-1 in overtime.
Team USA got off to a blistering start, as Matt Boldy scored the opening goal in the first period. Despite the U.S. being up 1-0 at the break, the game was fairly even, with both sides trying to figure each other out.
From there, though, Canada took control of the game. The Canadians dominated the second period, finally scoring when Cale Makar beat Connor Hellebuyck. Canada went into the second break up 14 shots and with all the momentum.
However, Hellebuyck was the difference in the game. The Winnipeg Jets goalie saved 41 of 42 shots and kept the team in the game with many massive saves. Hellebuyck stopped both Connor McDavid and Macklin Celebrini on breakaway chances, kept Canada off the board on a 5-on-3 power play, and stood on his head all game.
When overtime came, the two sides played 3-on-3 to decide it, with chances coming on both ends. Finally, Jack Hughes scored the game-winning goal on Binnington, giving the United States their third gold medal ever in Olympic men’s ice hockey.
With the win, the United States won all six of their games and made history with their first gold medal since the iconic 1980 team.
The Sporting News tracked live scoring updates and highlights from the USA vs. Canada men’s hockey gold medal game on Sunday. Here are the complete results from the 2026 Olympics final.
