With their next opponent already known, second-seeded Rock Ridge boys’ hockey squared off against third-seeded Duluth East in the 7AA semifinals. Although the Greyhounds led for a majority of the contest, the Wolverines came back to win 5-4 in double overtime on Saturday.
After losing 4-1 a month and a half ago, East struck first this time around. Liam Brooks slapped it in on a rebound and then Marcus Anttila nailed the top corner to make it 2-0.
Toward the end of the frame, Landon Mathison launched it down to Cal Scott who took it in and buried it to to put Rock Ridge on the board. In the second, Colton Bialke netted a short-handed goal to tie things up but Jax Edgerton vaulted the Hounds back in front with a under a minute to go in the period.
While Mathison evened the score early in the third, a stellar pass from Jackson Bartovich to Caz Carlson gave the Wolverines their first lead of the day. However, in the waning minute and a half of the game, Greyson Medak had the equalizer to send the contest to overtime.
The first extra period didn’t result in any points but that changed in 2OT when the puck was knocked in front before Colton Bialke backhanded it into the cage to seal the deal.
It was an impressive performance for both goalies, where East’s Nolan Nygaard and Rock Ridge’s Wyatt Jonassen each made 35 saves.
Nonetheless, the Greyhounds end the season 9-16-2 while the Wolverines move on to face Grand Rapids in the title game at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
